Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Giants Preview
The Gujarat Giants were convincingly thrashed by Mumbai in their last match while Delhi were beaten in the reverse fixture by the UP Warriorz by 33 runs. Those results meant that Delhi are stuck in third place with four points from four games while Gujarat took the last spot with just one win in three games.
The pressure is high for both these teams but Gujarat will be feeling the need for a win far more in a competitive format like the WPL. Both teams will look at their overseas players to get them out of this temporary rut they find themselves in.
Delhi Capitals Form
Despite a convincing defeat in their previous match, Delhi won’t panic too early. There is enough skill and depth in that team to find a quick way out of the mire. In the last game, Delhi were simply undone by a scintillating knock from Chinelle Henry, who struck 62 off 23 balls with two fours and eight sixes. That innings carried UP Warriorz to 177 for 9.
In response, Delhi fought till the end but it just wasn’t enough eventually as the middle order collapsed against the pressure of a daunting target. Jemimah Rodrigues top-scored for Delhi with 56 off 35 balls with eight fours and a six. The only other major contributor was Shafali Verma, who managed 24 off 30 balls in an atypically slow innings.
There were several issues with that game, including the death bowling. But Delhi will be aware, especially with the level of experience in that team, that they are just one or two wins away from cruising in the top two.
Delhi Capitals Team News
Delhi won’t make too many changes too quickly considering they have several reliable resources to take them out of this poor run of form.
Gujarat Giants Form
Gujarat will be quite displeased with the way this season has panned out so far. They had several chances to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the season opener, which would have set the tone for the tournament.
As it stands, Gujarat are at the bottom of the league after their five-wicket loss to Mumbai in the previous game. This will be Gujarat’s first game in the new venue, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
There will continue to be a heavy reliance on their most experienced overseas stars, which include Deandra Dottin, Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner. Against the experience of Delhi, it could be a case of which team’s individual players are able to come away with performances of true substance.
Gujarat Giants Team News
After their last defeat, Gujarat could make some changes to their XI for this game.
Verdict
This game could be decided by which team comes away with more impactful innings. Both teams certainly have those players, particularly from an overseas standpoint. There is a sense that Delhi have the better Indian resources though, which could be another influential factor when the game gets tight.
