After a minor slump against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals came storming back into the WPL with a thrilling win in their previous match against the UP Warriorz Women. That win pushed Delhi to two wins from three matches while the Warriorz remain stuck without a win in the WPL so far.

UP Warriorz made a terrific start in that match, with Kiran Navgire scoring 51 off just 27 balls to set the team to a blazing start. However, the innings petered out after that until Chinelle Henry’s cameo of 33 off 15 balls brought the Warriorz up to a respectable score of 166 for 7 on a pitch that was two-paced. Annabel Sutherland was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 26 from her four overs.

In response, Delhi too made a sprightly start through their openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning. The pair put on a partnership of 65 runs in 6.5 overs before Verma was dismissed for a quickfire 26 off 16 balls. UP came back into the contest with two quick wickets but Lanning steadied the ship with 69 off 49 balls with 12 fours.

Eventually, it was Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp who carried Delhi home in a tight contest. Their unbeaten stand of 52 carried Delhi to the target on the penultimate ball.

Delhi don’t have too many problems apart. Even when they came under attack from Henry in the closing stages, Delhi relied on the experience from Jess Jonassen and Kapp to finish the innings nicely.

Delhi are blessed with three overseas allrounders that can easily bowl four overs each in Kapp, Jonassen and Sutherland. The added bonus is that they can all bowl towards the end of an innings when the pressure is often the highest.

Even in their batting unit, Delhi are in good stead with their opening partnership that can play in different ways. Lanning can often partner Verma to give the team solid starts but are also explosive, which may be needed on the good pitches of Bangalore.

Delhi are unlikely to tinker with their winning combinations too much.

The Warriorz have lots of work to do to come back into the WPL. Their fielding was awful in the previous match, which let Delhi through to the target. Even their overseas players were guilty of shoddy fielding under duress.

The Warriorz can go back to their most experienced players to get them out of this rut. Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Ecclestone and Grace Harris are three of their best players. And along with captain Deepti Sharma, there is enough skill in this team to come back into the tournament.

The Warriorz have found a gem in Navgire, who has power and belligerence. She showed all of that in a powerful knock of 51 in just 27 balls, with six fours and three sixes in the previous match.

The Warriorz may make some changes to their combinations for this game. Henry may make way for some horses-for-courses changes for batting-friendly conditions in Bangalore.
