It was an absolutely brilliant series so far, with India having already taken the series with an unassailable lead. Nevertheless, there’s so much life left in this match, as the two teams fight for points in the WTC cycle. This is perhaps the best chance for England to win a game, coming as it does in the conditions that suit them the most. I am going for India to take a first innings lead.

  • India have taken the first innings lead in 10 of their last 12 home matches (Tests)
  • England have conceded the first innings lead in 6 of their last 8 matches (Tests)
  • England conceded the first innings lead in 3 matches of this series (Tests)
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored a 50 in 3 of his last 5 innings (Tests)

Head to Head

India and England have played each other in 135 Tests so far with India winning 34, England winning 51 and the remaining 50 ending in a draw.

The series started with England winning the first Test by 28 runs. India bounced back with a 106-run win in the second Test and a 434-run victory in the third Test. They rounded off the series with a five-wicket win in the fourth Test.

India Form

India closed out the series with a win in the fourth Test. Interestingly, all three of India’s wins have seen them present England with an opportunity to run the game.

The biggest positive for India, in what has otherwise been an injury-hit series, has been Yashasvi Jaiswal (655 runs, Avg. 93.57). There were runs for Shubman Gill too, while Dhruv Jurel has been a surprise package in the last two Tests.

The Indian bowlers have hunted in pairs with Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin all aggregating 17 wickets in the series.

KL Rahul is still injured, which leaves a decision between Rajat Patidar and debutant Devdutt Padikkal. Jasprit Bumrah returns and should slot straight back in, but it could be a question of playing with two or three seamers.

England Form

England will be worried about losing their chances in the series, something which they had for three Tests in a row. They would still want to finish it on a high.

There wasn’t much joy for the visiting batters, although Zak Crawley (328 runs) has been a bit more consistent in the series. They would want a bit more from their star batter Joe Root (210 runs), who’s yet to hit the right chords in the series.

With the ball, England found new heroes, with Tom Hartley topping their bowling charts (20 wickets). Shoaib Bashir (12) has also stepped up to the occasion.

England Team News

England confirmed that Jonny Bairstow will play his 100th Test, so it could be a case of changing the bowling unit.

Verdict

I am looking at the possibility of backing England for a win, purely because this is a venue that suits them perfectly. Yet, it is the first innings lead that I am looking at and backing India to repeat that.
