The Southern derby is perhaps the best way to start the tournament, as Chennai and Bengaluru have two of the best fan bases in the competition. As for action on the field, both teams are likely to be rusty, although the home conditions favour Chennai slightly more, although MS Dhoni's decision to pass on the captaincy could make things interesting. I am putting my money on the Super Kings to start with a win.
- Chennai Super Kings have won 12 of their last 15 matches against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (IPL).
- Chennai Super Kings have won their last seven matches at this venue against RCB (IPL).
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru have lost 20 of their 30 matches against CSK (IPL).

Head to Head
There have been 30 IPL matches between Chennai and Bengaluru so far, with the team in yellow having a 20-10 edge. The record is even more skewed towards Chennai when playing at this venue, as they have a 7-1 win-loss record in such matches.
Last season, the teams met just once at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where CSK won by eight runs. The Super Kings scored 226 for 6, with Devon Conway and Shivam Dube scoring 50 each. Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis ran Chennai close but couldn’t get Bengaluru over the line.
Chennai Super Kings Form
Chennai won their fifth IPL title last season, defeating the Gujarat Titans in a final that went down to the wire. All eyes will be on MS Dhoni, with the influential ex-captain hinting that this could be his last IPL season. No one would have foreseen that, but it's Ruturaj Gaikwad's responsibility to lead the side.
The Super Kings have made a few squad changes, adding Daryl Mitchell and an exciting Sameer Rizvi in the auction. Other names to make their way to the club include Rachin Ravindra and Shardul Thakur.
It will be interesting to see how the players returning from injuries will slot in, as the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, and Dhoni himself are coming after long injury layoffs.
Chennai Super Kings Team News
Devon Conway is out with a thumb injury for Chennai. Matheesha Pathirana and Mistafizur Rahman were injured on national duty recently and will miss this match.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Form
Royal Challengers Bengaluru had an indifferent season last year, finishing sixth with 14 points. They had seven wins and losses each, missing out on the playoffs by two points.
The team, famous for its tagline of claiming that the title will be theirs every season, only to falter, is looking for better fortunes this year. They have inspiration closer home, as the women’s team has won the WPL title recently.
In addition to changing their name, the RCB side has also added Cameron Green to the auction. Alzarri Joseph is another interesting addition to their bowling, which has always been their Achilles’ heel.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Team News
Alzarri Joseph and Cameron Green are more than likely to make their RCB debuts here.
