Mumbai have given themselves a breather with back-to-back wins, but two losses from their last three have brought them back to square one. Delhi is moving in the opposite direction, picking up momentum and moving up the table. I am putting my money on Delhi winning here.

Head to Head

Delhi and Mumbai have met 34 times in total, with Mumbai winning 19 and Delhi winning 15 matches. It’s Mumbai who have had the upper hand lately, winning eight of the last 11 matches, including three in a row.

The sides met earlier in the season in Mumbai, when the Indians won by 29 runs. Their score of 234 for 5 batting first was based on three batters scoring 40s. Tristan Stubbs (71 off 25) gave Mumbai a scare, but with no support at the other end, their chase fizzed off as Gerald Coetzee took four wickets.

Delhi Capitals Form

The Capitals are stuck in the mid-table logjam with eight points from nine matches. They could get into playoff contention with another win here.

Delhi are coming off a four-run win over the Gujarat Titans at this venue this week. A Rishbah Pant masterclass (88* off 43 balls) lifted them to 224 for 4, which proved just enough. Rasikh Dar Salam and Kuldeep Yadav shared five wickets among the bowlers.

Pant (342 runs) remains Delhi’s best batter by a country mile, while Kuldeep (12 wickets) is turning in good performances match after match.

Delhi Capitals Team News

Gulbadin Naib has been signed as Mitchell Marsh’s replacement but is unlikely to get a game here. Anrich Nortje’s poor form is a worry, and they have Jhye Richardson and Lizaad Williams in the squad.

Mumbai Indians Form

Mumbai Indians are lurking in the bottom three with only six points from eight matches. They could leapfrog Delhi with a win, as their NRR is better than their hosts.

A nine-wicket thrashing at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals was Mumbai’s last outing, where they were comprehensively outplayed. A total of 179 for 9 batting first wasn’t adequate, as the Royals chased it down with eight balls to spare. Tilak Varma (65) and Nehal Wadhera (49) were the only bright spots.

Rohit Sharma (303) remains Mumbai’s best batter, while Jasprit Bumrah (13) and Coetzee (12) have been their leading lights with the ball.

Mumbai Indians Team News

Mumbai could once again reshuffle their bowling pack, with Mohammad Nabi likely to give way to Romero Shepherd.

Verdict

Half way into the tournament, Mumbai has yet to find a settled combination. Delhi, although not far from Mumbai in terms of being unsettled, has hit the right chords in the last few matches. They could relish this chance to get into the top four. I am putting my money on Delhi’s win.
