Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings IPL Tips

It’s the start of a bigger and better Indian Premier League as the IPL 2023 kicks-off with a match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. This will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with action set to begin at 7:30pm IST on Friday, March 31.

Gujarat Titans are the defending champions and have strengthened their core with some key additions. Chennai Super Kings are starting with a few injury issues and absences that could prove critical. I am backing Gujarat to start their campaign with a win. Keep and eye on Devon Conway who may be CSK’s top batter of the day.

  • Gujarat Titans have won 4 of their last 5 matches (IPL)
  • Gujarat Titans have won both their matches against Chennai Super Kings last season (IPL)
  • Gujarat Titans have conceded the most 6s of the match in 10 of their last 16 matches, tying the count in 4 (IPL)
  • Chennai Super Kings have lost their last 2 opening matches of a season (IPL)
  • Devon Conway has hit at least 1 six in 4 of his last 6 matches for Chennai Super Kings (IPL)

Head to Head

There were only two matches played between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. Both came last season with the Titans winning each time.

In the first match, the Titans won by three wickets chasing down 170 in the last over. David Miller’s unbeaten 94 trumped Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 73. This was followed by a seven-wicket win for the Titans who chased 134. Gaikwad once again shone with 53 but Wriddhiman Saha led the chase for the Titans with an unbeaten 67.

Gujarat Titans Form

Gujarat Titans are the defending champions having defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final. They continue to have most of their core players still with the team, while a few shrewd additions were done at the player auction.

They added Kane Williamson, Odean Smith and Josh Little during the player auction. Shivam Mavi was also added to the roster.

David Miller will miss the first match owing to his participation in the South Africa vs Netherlands ODI series. Josh Little missed Ireland’s ODIs against Bangladesh but has joined the Titans squad.

Gujarat Titans Team News

Miller’s absence opens the door for Matthew Wade as an opener, while Williamson provides middle-order stability. Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami are likely to lead the bowling.

Chennai Super Kings Form

Chennai Super Kings are the four-time champions and five-time runners-up, but finished 9th last season with only Mumbai Indians saving them from winning the wooden spoon.

MS Dhoni will lead the side once again and will hope to recreate the heroics of 2021 season when they won the title. The return of home and away action with Chepauk on the map gives them hope.

They added Ben Stokes to their stable in the player auction while former India Test batter Ajinkya Rahane also joins the side.

Chennai Super Kings Team News

Stokes is likely to play the first half of the tournament as a specialist batter. Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana aren’t available for the first three games. Sisanda Magala also misses the first few matches. Left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary is also a doubtful starter owing to a back injury.

Verdict

Gujarat Titans are favourites to win this encounter having covered all the bases during the player auction. The worry for Chennai Super Kings is the injuries to key bowlers and the delayed introduction of overseas bowlers. I am backing Gujarat Titans to win this match while Devon Conway could hit at least one six which offers good value.

With the tournament offering new rules like impact player, keep an eye on who’s getting in and out during the substitution process. That could decide your intra-game picks.
