These are the two best teams of the league stage, although it is Gujarat Titans who have been the most formidable. Their recent record gives them a great edge to proceed to the finals at the first chance. My pick is in the 6s count though, with Chennai primed to score the most 6s in the match. Keep an eye on the market for Shubman Gill to top the batting charts for Gujarat Titans.

  • Chennai Super Kings have struck the most 6s in 10 of their last 14 matches (IPL)
  • Gujarat Titans have conceded the most 6s in 8 of their last 14 matches (IPL)
  • Chennai Super Kings have struck the most 6s in their last 2 matches against Gujarat (IPL)
  • Shubman Gill has been Gujarat Titans’ best batter in 3 of their last 4 matches (IPL)
  • Devon Conway or Shivam Dube have top-scored for Chennai Super Kings in 9 of their last 11 matches (IPL)

Head to Head

Chennai have played Gujarat three times in the IPL and have lost each time. Two of those have come in the last season, though.

This season, these teams met in the first match of the season in Ahmedabad. Chennai posted 192 thanks to Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 92. Gujarat chased it down with Shubman Gill top-scoring with 63.

Gujarat Titans Form

Gujarat topped the league with ten wins from 14 matches. They are coming off a thrilling six-wicket win over Bangalore on Sunday which made it four wins from their last five matches.

Superman Shubman Gill has been their best batter literally leading their charge. He has 680 runs this season (avg. 56.66) with consecutive 100s leading into the final.

There’s no shortage of firepower with the ball as Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami have taken 24 wickets each, leading in the ‘Purple Cap’ race. The challenge though, will be to adjust to the low spinning track in Chennai.

Gujarat Titans Team News

There are no injury concerns in the Gujarat camp. They may look at Jayant Yadav as an extra spin option in place of Yash Dayal. R Sai Kishore, the local Chennai spinner, is another choice.

Chennai Super Kings Form

Chennai finished 2nd in the league stage with eight wins. They had to wait until their last match though, to confirm progression, although they were firm favourites.

The Super Kings thrashed Delhi Capitals by 77 runs in their last match making it three wins from their last four completed matches. Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad led their batting in that game, like all through the season.

The openers have aggregated 500+ runs and will once again be their best bets. With the ball, surprise package Tushar Deshpande (20) impressed while Ravindra Jadeja (17) has been steady.

Chennai Super Kings Team News

Chennai have no injury concerns and could field the same team.

Verdict

Gujarat Titans may be favourites but will have to quickly adjust to the slow conditions in Chennai. That gives a bit of edge to Chennai Super Kings although Gujarat have the right bowling unit to make the conditions count. I am putting my money in the 6s count though, backing Chennai Super Kings to strike the most 6s.
