Mumbai is almost out of the reckoning, as they need to win their remaining four matches and will need help from other sides. Kolkata, on the other hand, is sitting pretty comfortably in the top two and will look to make it to the playoffs with another win. I am backing yet another strong start for the visitors.

  • Mumbai Indians have conceded the most powerplay runs in their last 3 matches (IPL)
  • Kolkata Knight Riders have scored the most powerplay runs in 6 of their last 8 matches (IPL)
  • Kolkata Knight Riders scored the most runs in the first six overs in 6 of the last 9 matches against Mumbai (IPL)
  • Mumbai Indians have won 9 of 10 matches at this venue against Kolkata (IPL)

Head to Head

It is a skewed record that Mumbai has against Kolkata, winning 23 and losing only nine matches. It gets better at home, as Mumbai have won nine and lost only once in ten matches played at the Wankhede.

That includes a five-wicket win at this venue last season for the Mumbai Indians. A Venkatesh Iyer century (104) helped Kolkata post 185 for 6, but Ishan Kishan’s aggressive fifty led the charge as Mumbai aced the chase in the 18th over.

Mumbai Indians Form

The Mumbai Indians are ninth in the points tally with six points. They are coming into this match having lost their last three matches.

That includes a four-wicket loss to the Lucknow Super Giants, where Mumbai’s batting failed to click and posted a below-par 144 for 7. It was a tricky chase on a spicy pitch, but Mumbai didn’t have enough runs on the board.

Batters have found it tough, as only Tilak Varma and Rohit Sharma have crossed 300 runs this season. With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee share 27 wickets.

Mumbai Indians Team News

It could be interesting to see if Mumbai brings in the likes of Kwena Maphaka or Romario Shepherd.

Kolkata Knight Riders Form

Kolkata Knight Riders are second in the points tally with 12 points from nine matches. They are coming off an indifferent run of results, though, with three wins and losses each in their last six matches.

They are coming off a comfortable seven-wicket win over Delhi in their last match. Varun Chakaravarthy’s three-wicket haul restricted Delhi to 153 for 9, which was overhauled in the 17th over. Phil Salt (68) sparkled at the top.

Salt has been consistent for the Knight Riders (392 runs), with four scores of fifty or more. With the ball, three bowlers have 11 wickets each, while two have taken nine each.

Kolkata Knight Riders Team News

Harshit Rana is suspended for the Knight Riders, which could mean a game for Chetan Sakariya or Dushmantha Chameera. In the latter case, Mitchell Starc could also be benched.

Verdict

Kolkata may be better placed in terms of the playoff race, but they are chasing consistency. Mumbai is all but out of the race, but it can make things interesting with a win. I still think it’s Kolkata’s advantage when it comes to the first six overs. I am backing KKR to score more runs in the power play overs.
