After a poor game against Bangladesh where they were given a hiding, Afghanistan have an uphill battle. They need to defeat Sri Lanka by at least 127 runs or achieve the target with about 19 overs to spare to have any hopes of staying alive in the competition. It was an interesting series when the teams met in June, although Sri Lanka ended that series on a high. They are likely to fancy their chances here again and I am backing them in the win market.
- Afghanistan have lost their last 5 matches (ODIs)
- Sri Lanka have won their last 11 matches (ODIs)
- Sri Lanka have won 3 of their last 4 matches against Afghanistan (ODIs)
- Ibrahim Zadran has scored at least 50 runs in 4 of his last 6 matches against Sri Lanka (ODIs)
Head to Head
Afghanistan have played Sri Lanka in 10 ODIs so far with six wins for Sri Lanka, three wins for Afghanistan and one no result.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan started their tournament with an 89-run defeat at the hands of Bangladesh at this venue on Sunday. They struggled with the ball and gave away the initiative, never to recover.
Bowling first, they conceded 334 for 5 with star bowler Rashid Khan (0 for 66) struggling for fitness and rhythm. With the bat, they could only score 245 all out, with Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring fifties.
The Afghans have continued their poor run of form but now will have nothing to lose. A win here won’t do them any favours as they need a massive win to take them through.
Afghanistan Team News
Afghanistan may look to change Gulbadin Naib who was expensive in the first match. Rashid Khan’s fitness is also a concern.
Sri Lanka Form
Sri Lanka continued their recent form and started with a five-wicket win over Bangladesh, with 11 overs in hand. That victory more or less put them into the Super 4s, although they can’t be complacent here.
The Lions restricted Bangladesh to 164 with Matheesha Pathirana excelling with the ball (4 for 32). The chase was then settled with fifties from Sadeera Samarawickrama (54) and Charith Asalanka (62*).
Despite missing some key bowlers due to injuries sweeping their camp, Sri Lanka managed to hold their own and dominate the first match.
Sri Lanka Team News
Sri Lanka may field the same team that won the match against Bangladesh.

Verdict
Afghanistan have little to lose and everything to gain as they need to target a massive win over Sri Lanka. That is easier said than done, considering their recent form. These sides met as recently as June, when Sri Lanka came back from a match down to win the series 2-1. Afghanistan are going through a rough patch at the moment and if Rashid Khan continues to be gingery with his fitness, there may be further problems. I am backing Sri Lanka to win this match while in the individual market, I am keeping my eyes on Ibrahim Zadran.
