It is an interesting scenario for both teams who have most of their players coming from the recently concluded IPL. Australia have a slight edge in that aspect as a few of their players are already in the county circuit. Weather may not play spoilsport as it is expected to be sunny and there’s a reserve day in place as well. I am putting my money on Australia winning this one-off final with Steve Smith leading their charge.

  • Australia have won 3 of their last 6 matches played in England (Tests)
  • India have lost 10 of their last 14 matches played in England (Tests)
  • Steve Smith has scored at least 80 in 3 of his last 5 innings at this venue (Tests)
  • Marnus Labuschagne has scored at least 48 in 5 of his last 7 innings in England (Tests)
  • Nathan Lyon has taken at least 2 wickets in 8 of his last 12 innings in England (Tests)
  • Virat Kohli has failed to go past 55 in any of his last 8 innings in England (Tests)

Head to Head

Australia have played India in 106 Tests so far with 44 wins for the Aussies and 32 for India. Of the remaining, 29 Tests have ended in draws with one ending in a tie.

The last time these teams played was in India during February – March when Australia lost 2-1 with one match ending in a draw.

Australia Form

The last time Australia played a Test series was in March when they were beaten 2-1 in India. It was a different series for the visitors as they had to make up for the absence of Pat Cummins.

The regular captain comes back to take charge but the Aussies will miss out he injured fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. Michael Neser, who has been playing county cricket is drafted in as the replacement.

It would be Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne who will be their lead actors with the bat while Nathan Lyon may enjoy the dry conditions.

Australia Team News

For Australia, Marcus Harris and Josh Inglis are set to miss out. The last spot in the playing XI could be a toss between Scott Boland, Michael Neser and Todd Murphy.

India Form

India were last seen in the Test series against Australia that they won 2-1 at home. Most of the players though, are coming from participating in the Indian Premier League.

The ‘Men in Blue’ will look to Cheteshwar Pujara who has been in England for a few weeks, playing County Cricket. Ajinkya Rahane earned a place back, but it remains to be seen if he plays.

Rohit Sharma will be hard-pressed on his options, but the conditions could be a factor in deciding the combination.

India Team News

India are still yet to decide between Bharat and Ishan Kishan as their ‘keeper. The choice between playing one spinner or two spinners is also crucial, which actually decided their fate in the previous WTC final against New Zealand.

Verdict

Australia are slight favourites, probably for the fact that their batters are well accustomed to the conditions. India’s chances could hinge on the conditions being dry enough for their spinners.

I am still banking on Australia to do the job and win the final. Steve Smith is a good option to notch up a fifty in the first innings.
