Australia vs Pakistan Third Test

It will be an emotional farewell for one of Australia’s best batter of all formats David Warner, as Australia bring their Test series against Pakistan to an end. The third and final match of the series will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from Wednesday, 3rd January.

After surrendering meekly in the first Test, Pakistan made a good fist of the second match. There were times in the Boxing Day Test when it looked like the visitors will break their long-standing duck in Australia. It wasn’t to be and it looks like their moment has passed. I am backing Australia to win this match and give a farewell gift to Warner.

  • Australia have won their last 16 home matches against Pakistan (Tests)
  • Australia have won 10 of their last 11 home matches drawing the other two (Tests)
  • Pakistan have lost their last 11 matches in New Zealand and Australia (Tests)
  • Pakistan have lost their last 3 matches at this venue (Tests)
  • Steve Smith has scored a hundred in 2 of his last 5 innings at this venue (Tests)

Head to Head

Australia and Pakistan have played each other in 71 Tests with 36 wins for the Aussies while the Asians have won 15. The remaining 20 games ended in a draw.

The first match of the series saw Australia rout Pakistan for a 360-run win. In the second match of the series, Pakistan ran Australia close but eventually fell short by 79 runs.

Australia Form

Australia already clinched the Benaud-Qadir Trophy with two wins in two matches, but with WTC points on offer, they will be looking for a whitewash.

They struggled for consistency with the bat, although Mitchell Marsh (290 runs) made the best use of the lives he got almost every match. Even David Warner (208) was among the runs although most of those came through the century he made in the first match.

With the ball, it has been about captain Pat Cummins (13 wickets) who led with aplomb. Mitchell Starc (nine) has also given him ample support.

Australia Team News

Australia may go for a change in the bowling team composition with Scott Boland likely to replace Mitchell Starc.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan came close to breaking their drought in Australia, but fell short in the second Test. Even in the first match, they were in the game for a few sessions but their fight fizzled out faster.

It is their poor batting that has let them down with Shan Masood (146) and Abdullah Shafique (110) the only batters to aggregate more than 100 runs in this series.

There have been issues with the ball too, but Pakistani bowlers seem to have found their rhythm in the second Test. Newcomer Aamer Jamal (12 wickets) is the highest contributor while Shaheen Shah Afridi (eight) got into wicket-taking ways in Melbourne.

Pakistan Team News

Pakistan should look to get their spinner into the side because it’s Sydney. That could be Sajid Khan in place of Shaheen Shah Afridi, as the left-armer’s workload could be monitored.
