Australia vs West Indies Second T20I

In an exciting example of T20 cricket, Australia and West Indies played out a game with 400+ runs, which in the end turned out in favour of the hosts. The teams now move to the Adelaide Oval on Sunday for the second game starting afternoon, Indian time.

It was an excellent game in Hobart on Friday and one where both teams showed their strengths. The visitors are likely to once again go big on the big shots and I am backing them to score the most 6s.

  • Australia have conceded the most 6s of the match in 4 of their last 6 matches (T20Is)
  • Australia have conceded the most 6s of the match in 5 of their last 6 home matches (T20Is)
  • West Indies have struck the most 6s of the match in 8 of their last 10 matches (T20Is)
  • West Indies have lost 5 of their last 6 matches in Australia against the hosts (T20Is)

Head to Head

The teams have met in 20 T20Is so far with Australia and the Windies winning ten each. The record is more skewed in the recent past with the Aussies winning five and losing just one of the last six H2Hs.

Australia won by 11 runs in the first match in Hobart. The hosts piled on 213 for 7 before restricting the Windies onslaught at 202 for 8.

Australia Form

With all eyes on how the batsmen would perform, Australian batters lived up to the expectations in Hobart. It was David Warner’s 70 off 36 balls that started their charge.

There were important contributions from Josh Inglis and Tim David, with the duo scoring entertaining 30s. With a score of 213, it looked like they had a winning total although the Windies gave them a scare.

At 89 without loss just after eight overs, the Aussies needed to come back into the game and they did just that. Adam Zampa’s 3 for 26 made all the difference as the Windies kept faltering at every hurdle.

Australia Team News

Aaron Hardie and Spencer Johnson sat out the first match for the Aussies. Unless they are looking to rest Josh Hazlewood, it could be the same XI that plays here.

West Indies Form

West Indies would have wanted a better performance with the ball, as they struggled for control. It was Andre Russell who topped their bowling charts with figures of 3 for 42, but two of those have come in the last over of the innings.

The visitors didn’t resign to their fate and gave it a go with the bat. With an opening partnership of 89 at a rate of nearly 11 rpo, they put the hosts on the mat.

Brandon King’s expansive fifty and Johnson Charles’ impressive hitting at the top led the charge for the Windies. There were some fireworks from Jason Holder late in the day, but it only delayed the inevitable.

West Indies Team News

Gudakesh Motie, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers, and Oshane Thomas sat out for the visitors in the first T20I. Motie could fancy a game in place of the expensive Akeal Hosein.

Verdict

There’s another big-hitting game in the offing, as both teams look to finetune their squads for the World Cup. The visitors are likely to edge out the hosts once again in the six count and that would be my pick.
