Bangladesh vs Afghanistan One-off Test

Bangladesh play host to Afghanistan at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur for the only Test from Wednesday. This is a perfect opportunity for the hosts to avenge their loss to Afghanistan in the only Test from 2019.

This is not a venue that has suited Bangladesh in the recent times but they will definitely fancy their chances. The visitors are missing their talisman bowler Rashid Khan and that should give the hosts a big edge. My prediction for the Bangladesh vs Afghanistan one-off Test is a win for Bangladesh. Keep an eye on Mushfiqur Rahim and Ibrahim Zadran, who could personally top the batting charts for their respective sides.

  • Bangladesh have won 4 of their last 6 home matches against Afghanistan (All formats)
  • Afghanistan have lost 2 of their last 3 matches (Tests)
  • Afghanistan haven’t played a match since March 2021 (Tests)
  • Mushfiqur Rahim has scored 6 scores of 50 and above in his last 14 innings at this venue (Tests)
  • Ibrahim Zadran has scored at least 50 in 3 of his last 8 innings (Tests)

Head to Head

These sides have played each other only once previously. It was back in 2019 when Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 224 runs. Rashid Khan was the wrecker-in-chief with 75 runs and 11 wickets.

Bangladesh Form

The last time Bangladesh played a Test was in April 2023 when they won by seven wickets against Ireland at this venue.

That defeat was preceded by two losses to India in December, one of which has come at this venue. In fact, the hosts have lost of their last five Tests at this venue.

Bangladesh will be led by Litton Das after the original captain Shakib Al Hasan misses the series due to an injury.

Bangladesh Team News

Tamim Iqbal is a doubt for the hosts after his back injury flared up during training.

Afghanistan Form

Afghanistan are coming off a three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka where they missed Rashid Khan in a 2-1 series loss.

The visitors have played just six Tests so far, with the last of those coming back in March 2021. They have an even 3-3 win-loss record in those matches.

It will be the absence of Rashid Khan that hogs all the headlines although Afghanistan have wrist spinners in Izharulhaq Naweed and Zahir Khan in their ranks.

Afghanistan Team News

Afghanistan may leave out Afsar Zazai, Zahir Khan and Amir Hamza while the last one to sit could be decided based on the ground conditions.

Verdict

This is a match between two teams that don’t regularly play this format. Bangladesh and Afghanistan haven’t really excelled in the Tests which adds a new dimension to this game. Yet, the absence of Rashid Khan leaves a gaping hole and so does Afghanistan’s lack of game play in the longest format.

I am putting my money on Bangladesh to do the job, considering they have the slightest of edges on Afghanistan. A small wager can be put on Mushfiqur Rahim topping the batting charts for Bangladesh and Ibrahim Zadran doing so for Afghanistan.
