The Kiwis have lost just once in 17 Tests against Bangladesh, winning 13. It is tough to see Bangladesh pushing New Zealand all the way, especially as they are without Shakib Al Hasan. I am putting my money on New Zealand winning here.

  • Bangladesh have lost 7 of their last 10 home matches (Tests)
  • Bangladesh have never won a home match against New Zealand losing 3 of 6 (Tests)
  • New Zealand have won 13 of 17 matches against Bangladesh (Tests)
  • Kane Williamson has scored at least 53 in 7 of his last 8 innings against Bangladesh (Tests)

Head to Head

There have been 17 Tests between Bangladesh and New Zealand so far. The Kiwis have won 13 of those with three ending as draws and only one win for the Tigers.

That win came away from home for Bangladesh, who are yet to win a home Test against them. Three of six Tests played in Bangladesh have been won by New Zealand while the other three ended as a draw.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh had a disappointing ODI World Cup, crashing out of the group stages. As they look to change formats quickly, all eyes will be on how fast they can make the transition.

The hosts are without a few key players for this series. Regular captain Shakib Al Hasan is out of the series after fracturing his finger in the World Cup. Vice-captain Litton Das has taken a personal leave leaving Najmul Hossain to be their stand-in skipper.

There are three uncapped players in the squad, although it remains to be seen if any of them gets a chance here.

Bangladesh Team News

Bangladesh could slot their playing XI with spinners with a number of options at the disposal. It could be interesting to see if they give a debut to rookie left-arm spinner Hasan Morad.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand were beaten in the semis of the ODI World Cup and will be looking to quickly make a transition to the format themselves. They announced their seriousness in making a bid for the series by stacking their team with spinners.

Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, Ajaz Patel and Ish Sodhi are selected while Kyle Jamieson returns to join with Tim Southee and Matt Henry.

Trent Boult made himself unavailable for the tour and will be coached by Luke Ronchi after Gary Stead returned home following the World Cup.

New Zealand Team News

Matt Henry, Tom Blundell, and Will Young are likely to sit out while the visitors contemplate between Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner.

Verdict

Both Bangladesh and New Zealand will look to quickly change their format focus, as the Tests come calling. Bangladesh have been a force to reckon in the recent past, especially at home, but without Shakib Al Hasan they have a huge hole to fill. New Zealand will reckon they can win this, as they boast a very strong squad. I am backing New Zealand to win here, while Kane topping the batting charts for the visitors is a distinct possibility.
