I backed the New Zealanders to keep up their Test dominance over Bangladesh in the first Test, but it wasn’t to be. Bangladesh surprised them with an excellent bowling display and that remains a strong favourable factor for them in this match too. I am tempted to back the home side as they look set to continue their momentum. Back Bangladesh on a double chance.
- Bangladesh have won their last 3 home matches (Tests)
- Bangladesh have won their last 2 matches played at this venue (Tests)
- New Zealand have failed to win their last 5 matches in Asia (Tests)
- Kane Williamson has scored at least 104 in 4 of his last 6 innings (Tests)
Head to Head
There have been 18 Tests between Bangladesh and New Zealand so far. The Kiwis have won 13 of those with three ending as draws and two wins for the Tigers.
The win in the first Test was Bangladesh’s maiden victory at home against New Zealand. Three of seven Tests played in Bangladesh have been won by New Zealand while three ended as a draw.
Bangladesh Form
Bangladesh displayed a solid all-round performance in the first Test in Sylhet to win comfortably by 150 runs. After conceding a slender seven-run lead in the first innings, Bangladesh improved in the second innings to romp home.
The Tigers had Mahmudul Hasan Joy (86) to thank for their first-innings total of 310 while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored a second-inning hundred to help set a 332-run target.
That proved to be more than adequate as Taijul Islam took 6 for 75 in the second innings to follow his first-innings performance of 4 for 109.
Bangladesh Team News
Bangladesh could retain the same team that won them the first Test, unless they want to replace Shahadat Hossain in the middle-order.
New Zealand Form
New Zealand lost the plot in the second innings – with bot and ball – after managing to eke out a narrow lead in the first. Glenn Phillips was the surprise package with the ball in the first innings taking 4 for 53.
Their batting effort was led by Kane Williamson who scored a fluent 104 before the tailenders added crucial runs to give them a narrow lead. That proved to be inadequate as they allowed Bangladesh to score 338 in their second innings.
Only Ajaz Patel was impressive in the second innings with figures of 4 for 148. Their chase never took off as they kept losing regular wickets, with only Daryll Mitchell posting a fifty.
New Zealand Team News
New Zealand could look to bolster their batting with the inclusion of Rachin Ravindra in place of Henry Nicholls. There may be a temptation to play Mitchell Santner in place of Ish Sodhi to strengthen their lower-order batting.

Verdict
New Zealand didn’t live up to the billing in the first Test but refused to blame the World Cup hangover for their performance. To be fair, they were only one or two individual performances away from matching Bangladesh. That said, the hosts should be buoyed with what they did in Sylhet, as they come to their citadel of Mirpur. I am backing Bangladesh on the double chance while Kane Williamson could once again top the batting charts for New Zealand.
