Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka ODI World Cup

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka may have already been eliminated from the semi-finals race, but a place in next year’s Champions Trophy is at stake. This match #38 of the ICC ODI World Cup will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday.

It is hard to separate Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on current form, as both have struggled in the tournament. Sri Lanka are coming off a massive defeat to India, but will be looking for an immediate reply. As was seen in their win against England, familiar spin conditions usually bring the best out of their squad. I am banking on this familiarity to get Sri Lanka out of the woods and win this match.

  • Bangladesh have lost their last 6 matches (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost 6 of their last 8 completed matches against Sri Lanka (ODIs)
  • Sri Lanka have won their 3 completed World Cup matches against Bangladesh (ODIs)
  • Mahmudullah has been Bangladesh’s top-batter in 2 of their last 3 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

Bangladesh played Sri Lanka in 53 ODIs so far, losing a whopping 42 of those. They have won nine while the remaining two have ended without a result.

The last time these sides met was in the Asia Cup recently, where Sri Lanka have won both the matches – by five wickets and by 21 runs.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh are 9th in the points tally with two points from seven matches. They have lost six matches, all those coming in a row.

The only victory for the Bangla side has come in their tournament opener when they defeated Afghanistan. That is now looking a distant spectacle as they scramble to stay in the top-eight spots and keep their Champions Trophy qualification alive.

It's no secret that Mahmudullah’s 274 runs have been Bangladesh’s best in the tournament. The bowlers have struggled a bit, with only Mehidy Hasan (nine wickets) showing some incision.

Bangladesh Team News

With the pitch likely to support their slow bowlers, Bangladesh could look at getting Mahedi Hasan back into the side in place of Towhid Hridoy and Nasum Ahmed in for Taskin Ahmed.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka are 7th in the standings with four points from seven matches. While their top-four chances are only mathematically alive, the Islanders will hope to keep themselves in the top-eight race.

Two wins out of the last four matches isn’t poor reading, but the Islanders are coming off a massive 302-run demolition at the hands of India. With their batting folding up for just 55 in that match, the Lions need a quick reboot.

Sri Lanka will hope that Sadeera Samarawickrama can re-discover his mojo after scores of 0 and 36, which followed consecutive fifties. With the ball though, it is the consistent Dilshan Madushanka that is leading the charts with 18 wickets.

Sri Lanka Team News

Dunith Wellalage’s fitness could determine if Sri Lanka recall him in place of one of the seamers. There’s an outside chance that Kusal Perera also gets a place back in place of Dimuth Karunaratne.

Verdict

It’s very difficult to pick up which side has form on its side as both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are struggling of late. I am still putting my money on Sri Lanka winning this game, as they face the challenge of bouncing back after the humiliation at the hands of India.
