It’s been a cracking series so far with all three Tests producing exhilarating cricket. The action kept swinging one way to the other and it could so easily have been 3-0 to either side! Instead, it’s Australia who lead 2-1 but the absence of Nathan Lyon nullifies their advantage. I am sticking my neck out and putting my money on England winning this match.
- England have won their last 4 matches at this venue (Tests)
- The hosts have won 11 of their last 13 matches in Manchester (Tests)

Head to Head
There have now been 359 Tests played between England and Australia with England winning 111, losing 152 and drawing 96. It is Australia who have an upper hand at this venue though, having won four and drawn three of their last seven Ashes Tests here since their last loss in August 1981.
England Form
After a series of missed opportunities in the first two matches, England bounced back with a three-wicket win in Headingley. The changes worked like a charm for the hosts with all Mark Wood and Chris Woakes contributing handsomely.
It is still Ben Stokes’ runs that is keeping England in the series with their captain their leading scorer (309). Ben Duckett (237) has shown flashes of brilliance, but is yet to be consistent.
Stuart Broad (16) has been England’s best bowler in the series, but it was Mark Wood (seven) who made the difference in Leeds.
England Team News
Ollie Robinson hobbled off in the third Test and it looks likely that James Anderson replaces him for England.
Australia Form
Australia had their moments in the third Test to win the match and nail the series, but missed on critical points. They still lead the series and avoiding a defeat here will seal the Ashes for them.
Usman Khawaja (356) has been Australia’s best batter in the series followed by the belligerent Travis Head (266). The roaring form of Mitchell Marsh (146) in the third Test added to their riches of batting.
Bowling duties have been shared by Pat Cummins (15) and Mitchell Starc (13) but the absence of Nathan Lyon puts pressure on the visitors at a venue that traditionally favours spin.
Australia Team News
Cameron Green missed the third Test but is all set to return to the team. That puts the visitors in a fix over whom he will replace – Mitchell Marsh or David Warner.

Verdict
It has been a series to savour as both England and Australia have been trading blows consistently. It is looking increasingly risky to pick one side over the other on the win market.
Despite such indifferent record, I am putting my money on England to win this match. Keep only medium wager on this while Joe Root’s love affair with Old Trafford pushes us to back him in the fifty market.
