England vs Australia Ashes Third Test

The second Test in Lord’s was another thrilling affair between England and Australia, but the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow became a flashpoint between teams. So much so that even the Prime Ministers of the two nations got involved! Will this spur England to action in the Ashes, now that the urn is on the line? The third Test will be played at the Headingley in Leeds from Thursday, July 6.

It hasn’t been a series to remember for the English fans, bar some flashpoints that have certainly riled up the public. Notwithstanding the noise outside, England know that anything less than a win would see their Ashes hopes go off. Yet, it is a tricky spot to be in for the hosts as Australia seems to be the better side in terms of quality. I am going to back the visitors on the Double Chance.

  • England have lost 4 of their last 6 matches at this venue against Australia (Tests)
  • Australia are unbeaten in their last 7 matches against England (Tests)

Head to Head

After the Lord’s Test, there have now been 358 Tests played between England and Australia with England winning 110, losing 152 and drawing 96. The last time these sides played at Headingley was in 2019 when Ben Stokes led England to a thrilling one-wicket win adding 76 unbeaten runs for the final wicket with Jack Leach.

England Form

It has been a series of what-ifs for England with two defeats keeping them on the edge of a series loss. The two-wicket loss in the first Test at Edgbaston could so easily have been a win, if they had bowled better.

Same is the case with the 43-run defeat at the Lord’s where they were poor with the ball and looked incisive. It was Ben Stokes’ gutsy knock that even gave them a glimmer of hope.

The English captain has been England’s highest run-getter (216) in the series followed by Ben Duckett (212). With the ball, Stuart Broad (11) and Ollie Robinson (10) have been England’s best bets.

England Team News

England announced their XI on Wednesday with Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Moeen Ali coming into the side in place of James Anderson, Josh Tongue and the injured Ollie Pope.

Australia Form

Australia have gone from strength to strength in the series, winning clutch moments like the Australian sides of the old. Barring the unsavoury incidents, there isn’t an iota of doubt that they have been the better team.

The visitors have enjoyed spells of domination with both and ball, where they put England away comprehensively. Usman Khawaja’s runs (300) have been the difference with his calm at the top rubbing off positively.

While Steve Smith gets ready for his 100th Test, captain Pat Cummins will hope that his seamers continue to hunt in packs. Together with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, Cummins has taken 22 series wickets.

Australia Team News

Australia will most likely play Todd Murphy in place of Nathan Lyon, who is out of the series,

Verdict

The Ashes series is at a flashing point where the scenes from the second Test at Lord’s threaten to boil over. England could find that extra motivation to make a comeback in the series while Australia could keep pushing the limits and close out the series.

I believe Australia has the right tools to close out here, and I am backing them on the Double Chance market. Usman Khawaja looks solid at the top and could be Australia’s top batter in the first innings.
