This is a series that doesn’t add value to either side in the short term. England have only one player from this squad who’s also part of the World Cup squad. Ireland have their sights set on the next World Cup cycle. This could nevertheless be a good chance for the visitors to express themselves. I am putting my money on England scoring the most match sixes.

  • England have hit the most match sixes in 8 of their last 9 matches (ODIs)
  • Ireland have conceded the most match sixes in their last 3 matches against England (ODIs)
  • England’s Zak Crawley has scored at least 39 in 2 of his 3 matches (ODIs)
  • Ireland’s Josh Little has taken 2 wickets in 3 of his last 4 matches (ODIs)
  • Ireland’s Josh Little has taken 2 wickets in all 3 matches against England (ODIs)

Head to Head

England have played Ireland in 13 ODIs so far with England winning ten and losing two. One match ended without any result.

The last time these sides met was in August 2020 in a three-match series that England won 2-1. The last of those matches saw Ireland pull out a seven-wicket win.

England Form

England come into the series on the back of a 3-1 win over New Zealand but this is a completely different side. Only Joe Root from the World Cup team is part of this squad.

Zak Crawley will captain the side as they look to make the most of this series for testing the bench strength.

There are four uncapped players in the England squad with Sam Hain, Tom Hartley, George Scrimshaw, and Jamie Smith all in line to pick up a debut at some point in the series.

England Team News

England added Joe Root to the squad for the first ODI as he looks to improve his recent form. Crawley could look at using Phil Salt as a ‘keeper which means Jamie Smith may have to wait for his debut.

Ireland Form

Ireland were last seen in the ODI World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, where they flopped spectacularly. They lost to Oman, Scotland and Sri Lanka in the first three matches to crash out.
They did win their last three matches against the UAE, the USA and Nepal but that wasn’t enough to ensure qualification.

The Irish are already building up towards the 2027 ODI World Cup and will be playing under temporary captain Paul Stirling after Andrew Balbirnie resigned.

Ireland Team News

Ireland have come with a 15-man squad which means Neil Rock, Theo van Woerkom, and Graham Hume could be sitting out along with one of Gareth Delaney or Barry McCarthy.

Verdict

England are using this series to test their second-string which should give a chance for Ireland to stake claim. Yet, recent form of the Irish suggests they are nowhere close to where they want to be in terms of competing. I am backing the hosts to hit the most match sixes while Josh Little could end up taking at least two wickets.
