England vs Ireland Second ODI

England and Ireland meet in a three-match ODI series spread over seven days with contrasting objectives. The first match was washed out without a ball being bowled and the second will be played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday from 3:30pm IST.

England would have loved to look at this match as a practice series but this is definitely not that. Joe Root was expected to link back with the World Cup squad after some practice in the first match. His best-laid plans were robbed because of rain. Now it is up to the second-string side to make the most of the conditions and chances. I am putting my money on England scoring the most match sixes.

  • England have hit the most match sixes in 8 of their last 9 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Ireland have conceded the most match sixes in their last 3 completed matches against England (ODIs)
  • England have won 10 of the 12 matches against Ireland (ODIs)
  • Ireland’s Josh Little has taken 2 wickets in 3 of his last 4 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Ireland’s Josh Little has taken 2 wickets in all 3 completed matches against England (ODIs)

Head to Head

England have played Ireland in 13 ODIs so far with England winning ten and losing two. One match ended without any result.

The last time these sides met was in August 2020 in a three-match series that England won 2-1. The last of those matches saw Ireland pull out a seven-wicket win. The first match of the series was, of course, a washout.

England Form

England’s last foray in the ODIs was a 3-1 win over New Zealand but that was a completely different side. Even Joe Root has gone back to linking with the World Cup squad, so the transformation is complete.

This series is a great chance for the likes of Phil Salt, Will Jacks and even captain Zak Crawley to show what value they can add to the ODI side.

There are four uncapped players in the England squad with Sam Hain, Tom Hartley, George Scrimshaw, and Jamie Smith all in line to pick up a debut at some point in the series.

England Team News

England saw Joe Root end his single-match stint with this side. There’s Jason Roy too, who has decided not to link up with the side. Tom Kohler-Cadmore has joined as his replacement.

Ireland Form

Ireland would have been desperate to get on the field as the last time they took the field was in the ODI World Cup qualifiers. They lost to Oman, Scotland and Sri Lanka in the first three matches to crash out.

They managed to win their last three matches against the UAE, the USA and Nepal but that couldn’t save them the blushes.

It is no secret that the Irish are building up toward the 2027 ODI World Cup and even next year's T20 World Cup. Temporary captain Paul Stirling will be expected to step in after Andrew Balbirnie resigned.

Ireland Team News

Ireland’s 15-man squad could be culled with the likes of Neil Rock and Theo van Woerkom not sure if they would get a game immediately.

Verdict

England wanted to see how their second-string side went by, but their plans were ruined by rain. They still are favourites against an Irish side that is looking sluggish. It is the sixes market that I am looking at, backing the hosts to score more while Josh Little could end up taking at least two wickets.
