England vs Ireland Third ODI
England lined up their second-string squad for the second ODI which they won by 48 runs in Nottingham. With experimentation once again set to be the agenda, the series ends with the third and final ODI at the County Ground in Bristol on Tuesday from 5 pm IST onwards.

England are making no bones about it that this series is a springboard for their second-string players. That doesn’t make Ireland favourite for this encounter, but there’s no value in backing England. Instead, I am dipping into the opening partnership market and backing England to do the job.
- England have won 11 of the 13 matches against Ireland (ODIs)
- England have posted the highest opening partnership of the match in 6 of their last 7 completed matches (ODIs)
- Ireland have conceded the most runs for the opening partnership in 7 of their last 10 matches (ODIs)
- Ireland’s Craig Young has taken 2+ wickets in 6 of his last 7 matches (ODIs)
- Ireland’s Josh Little has taken 2 wickets in 3 of his 4 completed matches against England (ODIs)
Head to Head
England have played Ireland in 14 ODIs so far with England winning 11 and losing two. One match ended without any result.
The last time these sides met was in August 2020 in a three-match series that England won 2-1. The last of those matches saw Ireland pull out a seven-wicket win. The latest match was a 48-run win for England in Nottingham on Saturday.
England Form
England’s second-string players didn’t miss on a rare chance to impress, dishing out a comprehensive 48-run win in the second match. Although the winning margin was reduced due to some lower-order hitting by the Irish, there’s never a doubt about the winner.
The Three Lions will now look to complete the series win with another impressive victory. The base was perfectly set up by the openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks who were aggressive from the get-go.
Bowlers impressed too with the leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed picking up four wickets. With Adil Rashid taking five wickets at this venue when England played Ireland in 2017, the leg-spinner could be enjoying the attention once again.
England Team News
England didn’t play Luke Wood and Tom Kohler-Cadmore in the first ODI. The former could get a chance as a replacement for Brydon Carse.
Ireland Form
Ireland’s focus was on building the squad for the upcoming T20I and ODI World Cups, as they failed to qualify for the global event starting in October.
The visitors did little to advance their cause, conceding 334 for 8 with only the part-time spin of George Dockrell fetching some respectability. There were wickets for Craig Young too, but surprisingly he bowled just seven overs.
With the bat, it was a complete top-order collapse as they collapsed to 188 for 8. It was only the late-order hitting that took them to 286 in the end.
Ireland Team News
Ireland could give a game for Graham Hume in place of Barry McCarthy or Josh Little. Left-arm spin all-rounder Theo van Woerkom is an option if they want to bench Andy McBrine.

Verdict
England got off the mark in style, although they would have wanted a swift end to their bowling innings. There’s no strong reason to back Ireland to pull off an upset win here. Instead, I am dipping into the opening partnership market to back England. For the individual player market, keep an eye on Craig Young.
