England vs New Zealand First ODI

After a keenly fought T20I series that ended at level pegging, England and New Zealand brace themselves for a four-ODI series. The first ODI will be played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Wales on Friday from 5pm IST onwards.

Both teams have their plans set on finding the right combinations for the upcoming World Cup. England have some key decisions to make but more than anything, their full-fledged first choice team will be on the ground after a long time. That could be a challenge to New Zealand although ruling the visitors out is a huge risk. Instead, I am putting my money on the hosts running the show with huge hits. Back England to score the most match sixes.

  • England have hit the most 6s of the match in 2 of their last 3 matches at this venue (ODIs)
  • England have struck the most 6s of the match in their last 5 matches (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have conceded the most 6s of the match in 8 of their last 10 away matches against England (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have conceded the most 6s in 5 of their last 6 matches (ODIs)
  • Devon Conway has hit 3 scores of 50 or above in his last 5 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 91 ODIs between England and New Zealand so far. Of these matches, 41 have been won by England, 43 by New Zealand, three tied matches and four no-results.

The record is more skewed in favour of England in matches played in this nation. New Zealand have lost 17 and won 12 of the 32 away ODIs played against England.

England Form

England haven’t been playing the ODI format frequently. They have only played 36 ODIs since the end of last World Cup, which makes this series crucial for finding the right combination.

The last time England played an ODI series was in March this year when they won 2-1 in Bangladesh. There are a number of players coming back to the side – including the talisman all-rounder Ben Stokes.

With so many variables yet to be answered, England will be looking for a winning start to the series.

England Team News

England added Harry Brook to the squad and it could be interesting to see if he replaces Dawid Malan or Liam Livingstone in the playing XI.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand lived true to its tag of underdogs, scripting a comeback from 2-0 down to end the T20I series 2-2. They could be looking to stun the hosts once again, in a different format.

The Kiwis last played this format in May when they were beaten 4-1 by Pakistan. Much like the hosts, the visitors are looking at this series to check their combinations.

Actual skipper Kane Williamson is still rehabilitating and hence Tom Latham will be the stand-in skipper for the Kiwis.

New Zealand Team News

The return of Trent Boult strengthens the side as the Kiwis have a rich pool of fast bowlers to choose from. That could mean a place on the bench for Adam Milne and Matt Henry.

Verdict

England and New Zealand had a fairly satisfactory T20I series, where they could give game time to their white-ball back-up squad. The ODIs are a different ball game and the big hits of the English batters could be the game changer. I am putting my money on England scoring the most 6s in the match.
