England vs New Zealand Fourth ODI

England managed to edge out New Zealand in an emphatic style to lead the series 2-1 going into the final ODI. This has all the makings of a classic as the teams play the final ODI at Lord’s in London on Friday, September 15 from 5pm IST.

This series is going exactly the T20I series where it ended 2-2. New Zealand would love that to happen, but England are better suited to this format in addition to enjoying an uptick in form. I am backing the hosts to close out the series with a win.

  • England have won 5 of their last 8 matches at this venue, tying one and lost 2 (ODIs)
  • England have won 6 of their last 8 home matches against New Zealand, losing only once (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have lost 9 of their last 11 away matches (ODIs)
  • Trent Boult has taken at least 2 wickets in each of his last 8 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 94 ODIs between England and New Zealand so far. Of these matches, 43 have been won by England, 44 by New Zealand, three tied matches and four no-results.

In the 35 ODIs played in England between these sides, England have won 19 and lost 13.

England Form

England’s form has been up and down in the tour, considering the T20Is also. Yet, wins in their last two ODIs gives them a platform to step up and win the series.

The hosts started with an eight-wicket loss in the first match where they had no answers to the Kiwis. They followed it up with a 79-run win and a 181-run victory to get back to where they ideally want to be.

Ben Stokes raced to the top of England batting charts (235) with that one innings of 182 runs. Liam Livingstone and Dawid Malan have also scored 150+ runs in the series. Bowling duties have been shared with only Reece Topley’s five wickets proving to be a difference.

England Team News

England benched Jason Roy in the third ODI but could give him a chance in this match.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand made sure that their bench players are given a chance to impress, making changes in all the matches so far. That has robbed them of the usual consistency you associate with their teams.

The Kiwis have had no answer to Stokes’ pyrotechnics and lost the plot. At no point they looked like challenging England in the third match. One player definitely challenging the hosts is Daryl Mitchell (192 runs) with the willow in hand.

Among the bowlers, prodigal son Trent Boult returned emphatically with eight wickets in the series.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand could once again make some changes to their playing XI which has been the theme for them in the series.

Verdict

England have been very impressive in the last two matches, showing how good they are when their plans come alive. Especially their aggressive batting gives England a chance to steer clear of any impending danger and they could once again play in the same way. New Zealand can’t be ruled out in any circumstances but this time around it is the hosts who look to have all the bases covered. I am putting my money on England winning here.
