England are one of the strong favourites for the title and although they have been troubled by the New Zealanders in the World Cups, this match could go the traditional way. England’s strong hitters are likely to give their side an advantage. I am putting my money on England winning here.

  • England have won 5 of their last 7 matches against New Zealand (ODIs)
  • England have won 6 of their last 9 matches in the World Cups (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have lost their last 5 matches played in India (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have lost 3 of their last 5 matches in the World Cups (ODIs)
  • New Zealand’s Trent Boult has taken at least 2 wickets in 9 of his last 10 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

England played New Zealand in 95 ODIs so far with both teams winning 44 games each. Three matches ended in a tie while there were no results in four matches.

The teams played as recently as September in a three-match ODI series in England. That was won 3-0 by England with three convincing wins.

England Form

England last played Ireland in a three-match ODI series that was won 1-0 with two matches washed away. While that series was played with a second-string team, England’s last foray with their main team was in a three-match series against New Zealand that they won 3-0.

In the two warm-ups before the World Cup, England saw their game against India abandoned without a ball being bowled. The game against Bangladesh was played for just about 61 overs due to rain.

The defending champions have left out Jason Roy at the last minute, replacing him with Harry Brook. Ben Stokes has come back from his retirement for one final hurrah.

England Team News

England are likely to leave out Gus Atkinson, Chris Woakes, Harry Brook and David Willey. Late doubts over Ben Stokes mean Brook could sneak into the XI.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand were last seen in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh they won 2-0 after the first ODI was abandoned. Before that, they were on the tour to England – albeit with a weakened side.

The Kiwis will be without captain Kane Williamson for the first match of the tournament, as he continues his post-surgery recovery. There are doubts over the participation of Tim Southee, who has broken his thumb in the England tour.

The two-time defending runners-up love being the underdogs and could try to upset the champions, with whom they have had some close contests in recent times.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand could give Rachin Ravindra a game to compensate for the absence of Kane Williamson. Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner could be the two spin options.

Verdict

England haven’t played with their full-strength team and when they do, they are one of the best out there. I am backing them to start the tournament with a win. As for individual players, there’s so much going for Trent Boult when he takes the ball for New Zealand. Put a small wager on the left-arm seamer taking at least two wickets.
