England vs New Zealand Second ODI

New Zealand played true to their strengths of enjoying the underdog status defeating England by eight wickets in the first ODI. The pressure is on the hosts now to level the series with the second ODI at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Sunday, from 3:30pm IST.

England struggled to assert their dominance as the World Champions failed to get going with the full-team assembling after a long time. They should fancy their chances of getting back into the series though, as they come to a venue that has been a happy hunting ground in the past. I am backing the hosts to rebound with a win.

  • England have won 7 of their last 8 matches at this venue (ODIs)
  • England have won 7 of their last 11 completed matches at home (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have lost 4 of their last 6 away matches against England (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have lost 7 of their last 9 away matches (ODIs)
  • Devon Conway has hit 4 scores of 50 or above in his last 6 matches (ODIs)
  • Jos Buttler has hit 4 scores of 50 or above in his last 6 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 92 ODIs between England and New Zealand so far. Of these matches, 41 have been won by England, 44 by New Zealand, three tied matches and four no-results.

Despite the loss in the first ODI, the record is still skewed in favour of England in matches played in this nation. New Zealand have lost 17 and won 13 of the 33 away ODIs played against England.

England Form

England batters couldn’t get going on a pitch where they failed to time the ball in the first ODI. Four batters scored fifties but no one scored more than Jos Buttler’s 72 as they ended up with 291 for 6 batting first.

Bowlers failed to assert themselves worse than the batters, as they could pick up just two wickets. England would have wanted to make a better match out of it, but losing with so much to spare wasn’t part of their plan.

England will now hope to make sure their plans are back in place, especially with the World Cup in sights.

England Team News

England’s bowling looked listless in the first match which means they could look to make some changes. Reece Topley and Gus Atkinson could be the ones under question with Sam Curran and Mark Wood waiting in the wings.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand continued their rising form after levelling the T20I series 2-2 from being 2-0 down with an eight-wicket win in the first ODI. It was a tribute to their strength that they dominated the game in all fields.

The Kiwis were led by the young spinner Rachin Ravindra’s three-wicket returns in the bowling. Concerns would be there though, on the poor returns of Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson.

There would be no such concerns with the bat, as Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell slamming unbeaten hundreds.

New Zealand Team News

Kane Williamson remains the only question for the visitors as his fitness remains something they want to keep an eye on.

Verdict

England need a quick rebound to get back into the series as another loss would leave them fall further behind in the stakes. There’s enough firepower in the home camp to bounce back quickly and I am backing them to win. On the individual front, Buttler could be the one to keep an eye on, to score a 50.
