England vs New Zealand Third ODI

England bounced back in the second ODI to level the series 1-1 but with emphasis on the upcoming World Cup, both teams have a lot to plan. The third match will be played at the Oval in London on Wednesday from 5pm IST.

After two interesting matches in the series, the score is levelled 1-1. There’s very little to separate the sides as they look to go about their long-term plans. England seem to have found their mojo though, at least in the big hits and we expect that to continue. I am putting my money on England scoring more sixes than their visitors.

  • England have hit the most 6s of the match in 6 of their last 7 matches (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have conceded the most 6s of the match in 9 of their last 12 away matches against England (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have conceded the most 6s in 6 of their last 8 matches (ODIs)
  • Daryl Mitchell has 4 scores of 57 or more in his last 6 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 93 ODIs between England and New Zealand so far. Of these matches, 42 have been won by England, 44 by New Zealand, three tied matches and four no-results.

In the 34 ODIs played in England between these sides, England have won 18 and lost 13.

England Form

England’s captain Jos Buttler spoke about being consistent with their aggressive play and that’s something that helped them in the last World Cup.

While this series hasn’t been a glorifying example of that, it has given us a glimpse of what to expect. Liam Livingstone (147 runs, SR 124.57) grabbed his chance with both hands while the others haven’t really done justice.

Among the bowlers, David Willey (four wickets)  showed a semblance of control (ER 5.57) although it’s his counterpart Reece Topley (three wickets) who’s quietly making a comeback.

England Team News

England missed Jason Roy for the first two matches due to an injury but he could be back in contention.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand captain Tom Latham spoke about the need to rotate the squad as they finalise their World Cup plans. Despite that penchant, they have been very competitive in the series.

While the usual suspects are yet to fire, it is the unassuming Daryl Mitchell (175 runs, SR 122.37) who has been quietly assuming the role of an anchor. Devon Conway has been impressive too (125 runs) but they need runs from captain Tom Latham.

Bowling has been about Tim Southee and Trent Boult who shared seven wickets between them. There could be a case of Southee being rested, which gives a better chance to look at the likes of Kyle Jamieson.

New Zealand Team News

Tom Latham spoke about changes in the side, which means there could be more rotation. Tim Southee and Matt Henry may get a break with Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson likely to be paired.

Verdict

England and New Zealand have been so closely stacked this series that they are nearly inseparable. The T20Is were close and the ODIs are proving to be closer! It is the sixes segment where we want to dip and test our fortunes. I am putting money on England scoring more big hits than New Zealand. Keep an eye on the market for Daryl Mitchell who seems to be enjoying turning up against England.
