Gujarat Giants vs Mumbai Indians Women Preview

Gujarat Giants came back into the WPL after a demoralising defeat in their tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. That loss was quickly put in the rearview mirror as they beat the UP Warriorz Women by six wickets with 12 balls remaining on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians started their season with a loss against Delhi Capitals. The manner of that defeat, which was filled with drama through the last few overs, was marred by questionable umpiring. However, Mumbai will be eager to put that behind them quickly and move on in a tournament that can come fast with just six participating teams.

Mumbai Indians will start this contest as clear favourites but there is plenty of firepower – and now some confidence and momentum – in the opposing camp, led by Ashleigh Gardner, who has now hit two consecutive impactful fifties to start the season.

Gujarat Giants Form

Gujarat will bank on some key players, including Beth Mooney, Gardner, Deandra Dottin and Laura Wolvaardt. In terms of batting firepower, that is as good as it comes in this tournament, maybe with the exception of Mumbai.

Gujarat will be pleased with several batters contributing, especially in the middle order. In a tricky chase of 144, Gujarat could bank on some key contributions from Harleen Deol (34 off 30 balls) and Dottin (33 off 18 balls).

In the bowling department, there are several gaps but some of them were plugged by legspinner Priya Mishra’s return to form with figures of 3 for 25 in her four overs in the previous game. There are still worries about the depth of their bowling, particularly under duress, as was the case in the tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Gujarat could look at bolstering their bowling resources by adding another allrounder in place of Sayali Satghare.

Mumbai Indians Form

Mumbai Indians have a lot of work to do but they certainly have one of the most balanced teams in this competition. In their tournament opener, two of their key allrounder – Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr – didn’t make it into double digits with the bat but contributed with two wickets each with the ball.

Nat Sciver-Brunt smashed 80 off 59 balls, with 13 fours, in a belligerent knock. She was given able company by Harmanpreet Kaur, who managed 42 off 22 balls, with four fours and three sixes but no other batter could score more than 11.

With the ball, Mumbai will continue to rely on their allrounder – Sciver-Brunt, Matthews and Kerr – to dominate the middle overs. Additionally, Mumbai have the services of Shabnim Ismail from South Africa, who started the competition with pace and fire as she returned figures of 1 for 18 from her four overs.

Mumbai won’t rush to make too many changes to their team after one defeat.

Verdict

It’s hard to see too many teams challenging this Mumbai team on a persistent basis. There is so much balance with three of their four overseas players playing a crucial hand with both bat and ball.

That, in itself, ensures that every other player is tasked with dominating their role. That isn’t the case with Gujarat, where there are some gaps in the Indian contingent.
