It wasn’t a complete performance against Australia but India managed to showcase their strength in these conditions with a comprehensive win. Afghanistan are at the opposite end of the spectrum after a big loss to Bangladesh. The win market isn’t worth a punt and hence I am dipping into the opening partnership market. Ishan Kishan has shown that he can be flashy and when he gets going, it could be tough for the Afghan bowlers. I am backing India to post the highest opening partnership.
- India posted the highest opening partnership in 8 of their last 11 matches (ODIs)
- India posted the highest opening partnership in 2 of their 3 matches against Afghanistan (ODIs)
- Afghanistan conceded the highest opening partnership in 3 of their last 4 matches (ODIs)
- Kuldeep Yadav picked up at least 2 wickets in 11 of his last 17 matches (ODIs)
Head to Head
India played Afghanistan in three ODIs so far, winning two and tying one. The last time they played in a ODI was in the 2019 World Cup when Afghanistan nearly chased 225, only to fall short by 11 runs.
India Form
India started the tournament with a six-wicket win over five-time champions Australia. The spinners did their bit first up, restricting Australia to 199.
Ravindra Jadeja led the show with three wickets while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. The chase, though, wasn’t straightforward after they lost three wickets for two runs.
From there on, Virat Kohli’s 85 and KL Rahul’s 97* anchored the chase giving India a win with nearly nine overs to spare.
India Team News
India will once again miss the services of Shubman Gill who has stayed back in Chennai to be under medical observation. The only question would be over the fifth bowler, with Ravichandran Ashwin fighting for that spot with Shardul Thakur.
Afghanistan Form
Afghanistan started their tournament with a six-wicket loss to neighbours Bangladesh. It was a low-scoring encounter as the Afghans failed to play even 38 overs, getting bundled out for 156.
Although they did manage to take a couple of quick wickets, Afghanistan were never in the match, eventually losing out by six wickets. None of the spinners were able to make their mark, though.
With the bat, only Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 47 was the highlight for Afghanistan, who had a couple of 22s otherwise.
Afghanistan Team News
Afghanistan may retain the same playing XI despite the loss, unless they want to give a game to Noor Ahmad.

Verdict
India are massive favourites to continue their winning start and the odds market is clearly swaying that way. There’s no value in backing them and we are not dipping in the win market. I am backing the Indian openers to do the job, considering their failure in the first match should make them hungry for runs. Especially Ishan Kishan knows that he has a rare chance to contribute and could go on being aggressive at the top. Among the bowlers, keep an eye on the market for Kuldeep Yadav.
