India vs Australia ODI II Tips

In a low-scoring thriller that thrilled the fans, India held their nerve and came out on top at critical moments to win the first ODI by five wickets. They now have a chance to close out the series as we move to the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam for the second match on Sunday, starting at 1:30pm IST.

Australia started the match on top and had their moments but fluffed their lines with the bat. They did make it interesting, but in the end, it was their poor batting that decided the contest. As we move to a high-scoring venue, I am backing this match to see a high first innings score. Keep an eye on the markets for a score more than 295 in the first innings. My main pick is Siraj taking over 1.5 wickets.

  • The average 1st innings score at this venue is 295
  • Mohammed Siraj has taken at least 2 wickets in 9 of his last 11 matches for India (ODIs)
  • India have won 7 of their 9 matches at this venue, losing only 1 (ODIs)
  • Virat Kohli has 3 hundreds and 2 fifties from his last 6 matches played at this venue (ODIs)
  • Steven Smith has 5 scores of 69 or more in his last 7 matches against India including 3 centuries (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 144 ODIs between India and Australia so far. There have been 80 Australia wins, 54 India wins and 10 no results out of these.

When playing at home, the record is much closer. There have been 65 ODIs played between these sides in India. There have been 30 wins each with five ending as no results.

India Form

India managed to chase down 189 with the loss of 5 wickets in Mumbai in the first match on Friday. The win was set up by the bowlers who restricted Australia to 188 all out in 35.4 overs.

Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers with 3/17 while Mohammed Siraj also chipped in with 3/29. Ravindra Jadeja took 2/46 in his first ODI after eight months.

The left-hand all-rounder also showed his mettle with the bat scoring an unbeaten 45 to win the ‘Player of the match’ award. KL Rahul top-scored with 75 not out.

India Team News

Captain Rohit Sharma returns after missing the first ODI because of a family commitment. He could slot in the place of Ishan Kishan.

Australia Form

Australia would look back at the first ODI as a lost opportunity because they looked in control at various points. After being sent in to bat, they were 129/2 in the 20th over.

Mitchell Marsh top-scored with a breezy 81 off just 65 balls but his departure led to a collapse where they lost eight wickets for 59 runs. They even failed to utilise 14.2 overs.

With the ball, Mitchell Starc’s 3/49 and Marcus Stoinis’ 2/27 made sure that India were reduced to 39/4 and 83/5. Yet, they failed to break Jadeja & Rahul partnership eventually losing in the 40th over.

Australia Team News

David Warner missed the first match due to an injury. Alex Carey went back home, so Josh Inglis would continue to keep the wickets.

Verdict

It was a much closer game than the final result showed in Mumbai. Australia have shown that they can push India in their backyard. That may once again be the case in Visakhapatnam. I am putting my money on individual players again with Siraj likely to be among the wickets once more.
