India were swept aside in the second ODI comprehensively and it will be a test of their character and the ability to bounce back. Both sides have been short of middle-order runs which makes it difficult to back any team on a win. Yet, I am putting my money on Australia simply because the scars of a huge loss and an in-form Mitchell Starc are tough to overlook.
- India have lost 7 of their last 12 matches against Australia (ODIs)
- Mohammed Siraj has taken at least 2 wickets in 9 of his last 12 matches for India (ODIs)
- Australia have won 4 of the 5 matches they played at this venue (ODIs)
- Steven Smith has 5 scores of 69 or more in his last 8 matches against India including 3 centuries (ODIs)
Head to Head
India and Australia faced each other in 145 ODIs. Of these, Australia have won 81, India have won 54 with the other 10 ending as no results.
The record in India gives nothing away as the teams have faced in 66 ODIs with India winning 30 and Australia winning 31 in ODIs played in India.
India Form
India have had an indifferent series so far. They chased down 189 in the first ODI in Mumbai, losing five wickets. In the second match, they were blown away for 117 before Australia cantered to a win off just 11 overs.
The home team is struggling to assert their dominance because of top-order struggles. No batter has scored more than 84 runs hit by KL Rahul in the series.
The only beacon of light has been pace bowling with Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami sharing three wickets each.
India Team News
Kuldeep Yadav has been expensive in the series and India may decide to go for an extra seamer in his place. Jaydev Unadkat could be in contention although Shardul Thakur is the frontrunner.
Australia Form
Australia never looked back on the trip after losing the first two Tests. They were all over India in the first ODI and could have even won it, if not for the batting collapse. In the second ODI, they gave no chance to India for making a comeback.
It’s the top-order batting that’s carrying the game for the visitors as Mitchell Marsh is making merry as an opener. He has 147 runs this series at a SR of 145.54.
While the batters continue to dazzle, it is actually the bowlers who have set their massive win in Vizag. Mitchell Starc has been a menace with his thunderous swing fetching eight wickets in the series.
Australia Team News
David Warner stayed out of the second ODI and it remains to be seen if he’s brought into the side, fitness permitting. Glenn Maxwell missed the second ODI due to an injury and his replacement Nathan Ellis bowled well, making life tough for the selectors.

Verdict
Australia have a slight edge going into the series decider, after the thumping win in the second ODI. Their powerplay batting gives them a massive edge, especially with Mitchell Marsh teeing off. I’m backing Australia to win this match with a small wager on Mitchell Marsh ending as their best batter.
