India vs Australia Third Test Tips

India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy within six days of action after defeating Australia convincingly in Nagpur and Delhi. They now have a chance to confirm their place in the WTC Final. This match will be played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore from March 1 onwards, starting at 9:30am IST or 3:00pm AEDT.

Both the Tests saw a dominant Indian team putting on a show and swatting Australia aside. That could once again be the case in Indore as Australia struggle with injuries and absences. I am backing an Indian win in this match with Ravichandran Ashwin likely to do that star turn for the hosts.

  • India have won 11 of their last 13 matches at home against Australia (Tests)
  • Australia have lost 13 of their last 20 matches played in Asia (Tests)
  • Ravindra Jadeja has taken at least 2 wickets in 18 of 20 innings at home against Australia (Tests)
  • Ravichandran Ashwin has taken 18 wickets at this venue in two matches (Tests)
  • Steven Smith averages 71.28 against India in 8 innings as captain of Australia (Tests)

Head to Head

India played Australia in 104 Tests so far with India winning 31, losing 43, one tie and 28 draws. When playing in India, there have been 52 Tests so far between these teams. India won 23, lost 13 and drew 15.

The Indian dominance has been much more prominent in the recent years. They have won 11 of their last 13 home Tests, losing only once.

India Form

After winning the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the ‘Player of the match’ with 70 runs and seven wickets in the match.

They followed that with another win in Delhi with six wickets. Once again it was Jadeja leading the show with the left-arm spinner taking ten wickets in the match and scoring 26 with the bat.

This match was supposed to be played at Dharamshala but was shifted to Indore owing to poor pitch conditions. Indore has been a lucky venue for India with two wins out of two.

India Team News

India face only one selection concern with the out-of-form KL Rahul at the top of the order facing question marks over his place. Shubman Gill is waiting in the wings to replace him.

Australia Form

Australia have struggled with the bat so far in the series with only two batters aggregating more than 100. Marnus Labuschagne with 119 runs and Peter Handscomb with 109 have been the only batters with that distinction.

The visitors have struggled even with the ball, although the off-break duo of Todd Murphy and Nathan Lyon combining for 18 wickets. With another spin pitch awaiting the sides, those two could once again be playing a larger role in this match.

Australia Team News

Captain Pat Cummins is out on a compassionate leave which leaves Steven Smith as Australia’s captain for this match. David Warner and Josh Hazlewood are out of the series with injuries. Spinners Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson are also sent back home for different reasons.

Verdict

In home conditions, there’s no stopping India’s dominance over Australia – at least in the recent times. Even in this series, they have shown the strength of spin bowling and that could once again lead their charge.

I am backing India to win this Test and close out the series. A small wager can be put on Ashwin coming up with a Player of the match performance.
