India vs Australia First ODI

With an eye on the upcoming World Cup, India and Australia look to finetune their preparations with the three-match ODI series. The first of the matches will be played at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali starting at 1:30pm IST on Friday, September 22.

India have rested quite a few regulars for the first two ODIs as they look to test the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer. Key Australian players are returning from injuries but having already shown their prowess with a series win in March, they remain favourites. I am backing the hard hitters of Australia to enjoy the conditions and score the most match sixes.

  • India have conceded the most match sixes in their last 3 home matches (ODIs)
  • Australia have hit the most match sixes in their last 4 matches against India (ODIs)
  • Australia have hit the most match sixes in their last 3 matches in India (ODIs)
  • Mitchell Starc has taken 3 wickets or more in 4 of his last 6 matches (ODIs)
  • Mitchell Marsh has 3 scores of 50 or more against India in his last 4 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

India played Australia in 146 ODIs so far. Of these, there have been 54 wins for India and 82 wins for Australia. Ten matches ended without any result.

The last time these sides played was in March 2023, when Australia came from a match down to win the three-match series 2-1.

India Form

India are coming off a victorious Asia Cup campaign where they won the title with a scintillating display in the final against Sri Lanka. That was fashioned by Mohammed Siraj as they won comfortably.

The series was a positive one for India, with only one loss in the tournament. That too came against Bangladesh in an inconsequential league match where India made a number of changes.

The hosts have rested key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav for the first two ODIs with KL Rahul set to be the captain.

India Team News

India could slot Ravichandran Ashwin straight into the side to check his suitability as they look to cover for Axar Patel’s injury.

Australia Form

Australia are coming off a 2-2 series result in South Africa where they won the T20s 3-0 prior. They even led 2-0 in the ODIs but failed to make it count.

The Kangaroos are coming with a 18-man squad as they look to make for the absences and test benchwarmers for a starting role. Captain Pat Cummins comes back and so do some of the regular players like Steve Smith, Mitch Starc and Glenn Maxwell.

The visitors are likely to bank on their power hitters, which was the difference in the previous series they played in March.

Australia Team News

Australia are likely to use this series to test the fitness of the returning players plus validate their options at the top of the order as Travis Head’s injury keeps them guessing.

Verdict

I am backing Australia here, to do the job with the big hits. Last series saw Mitch Marsh use his big handle, while Maxwell also comes back for this series. There’s a slight inkling to back the Aussies on the win count but that is something I am staying away from. Instead, I am putting a small wager on Starc taking at least three wickets.
