On the heels of an exciting month and half ODI action, India and Australia resume their rivalry in the T20I format. This time it’s a five-match bilateral series with the first match in Visakhapatnam on Friday. The venue is Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, with the match set to start at 7pm IST.

India have opted to rest most of their regulars with T20 specialists making their team. The home side usually enjoys this format in bilateral series, but this one could be different. Australia may have an edge with big hitters part of their squad. I am putting my money on Australia winning this match
- India have scored the most 6s in their last 4 home matches against Australia (T20Is)
- Australia have won their only match against India at this venue (T20Is)
- Australia have won 4 of their last 6 matches in India against India (T20Is)
- Arshdeep Singh has taken over 1.5 wickets in 5 of his 7 matches played in India (T20Is)
Head to Head
India played Australia in 26 T20Is so far, winning 15 and losing ten. The remaining match ended without any result.
The teams last played each other in this format last September when Australia toured India for a three-match series. India won that series 2-1 after losing the first match.
The continuous dose of cricket churns out the latest series as India take the field four days after their loss in the ODI World Cup final. This will be their chance not just to drown that loss but also start their preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup.
Regulars have been rested with T20 captain Hardik Pandya also missing out due to injury. That leaves Suryakumar Yadav as the interim captain, for the first time in his career.
Most of the players in the squad have been part of the gold-medal winning side in the Asian games with the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rinku Singh looking to further their claims for a regular berth.
India Team News
Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar could be the ones sitting out for India.
Australia are on a high after winning the ODI World Cup with a dominating win over India in the final. There is a lot of churn from that side though with the multi-format regulars given a rest.
The visitors don’t have a full-time T20 captain and Matthew Wade has been recalled, as an interim captain. The squad still has players from the ODI winning side like Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa among others.
This could be a test of their longevity and concentration as the Aussies will be looking to find their best form at the end of a very long tour.
Australia Team News
Adam Zampa could be rested after a long tournament with Tanveer Sangha a readymade replacement. Aaron Hardie could also miss out while Josh Inglis or Travis Head may take a break.
