India have been hit hard by the news that they could be without Shubman Gill but are still very strong in these conditions. Australia could be tested by the variety of spin options in India’s arsenal. It is in the opening partnership segment though, where I am dipping my feet. I am still backing Indian openers to do the job, despite the potential absence of Gill.
- India have scored the highest opening partnership in 8 of their last 10 matches (ODIs)
- India have scored the highest opening partnership in 2 of their last 3 matches against Australia (ODIs)
- Australia have conceded the highest opening partnership in 4 of their last 6 matches (ODIs)
- Adam Zampa has taken 2+ wickets in 8 of his last 14 matches played in India (ODIs)
- Adam Zampa has been Australia’s highest wicket taker in 4 of their last 9 matches (ODIs)
Head to Head
This will be the 150th ODI between India and Australia. Of the games played so far, India won 56, lost 83 and ten matches ended without any result.
The teams recently played a three-match series in India, with India winning 2-1.
India Form
India’s last participation in the ODIs before this World Cup was in the three-match series against Australia which they won 2-1. Before that, India were participating in the Asia Cup and they won by beating Sri Lanka in the final.
The two-time World Champions India are looking to do better than the last two editions when they failed to go past the semis. They also want to be the winners like the last time in 2011 when India hosted the marquee event.
The warm-ups were a drab affair for India, with both their games against England and the Netherlands abandoned without even a ball bowled.
India Team News
India are sweating over the fitness of Shubman Gill, who is reportedly down with dengue fever. That could open the doors for Ishan Kishan, while Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Siraj and Suryakumar Yadav could miss out.
Australia Form
Australia didn’t travel to India for the bilateral series with their main squad and were beaten in the first two matches before winning the third.
The five-time champions lost in the semis last time out to England, and were beaten in the quarter-finals when this tournament was last played in India.
Their preparations for the tournament were hampered by rain with only 37 overs possible against the Netherlands. They did get a full game against Pakistan where they won a high-scoring match by 14 runs.
Australia Team News
Australia had doubts over the availability of Marcus Stoinis but he recovered well to be fit for the match. Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne are likely to sit out for the visitors.

Verdict
Australia may have been easily beaten by India in the series preceding this tournament, but the multiple champions can’t be taken lightly. They have always enjoyed this competition and could spring a surprise. With the hard hitters they have, it is difficult to rule them out completely. I am not backing a winner in this match, but instead putting my money on India posting the highest opening partnership. Keep an eye on Adam Zampa and the individual market for bowlers.
