With the regular World Cup squad set to take the stage for the third match, this is going to be the last chance saloon for the fringe players. India showed in the first match that they are set to enjoy the conditions although Australia did look rusty with the returning players playing it slow. I am looking at the sixes market again, putting my money on Australia scoring the most match sixes.
- India have conceded the most match sixes in their last 4 home matches (ODIs)
- Australia have hit the most match sixes in their last 5 matches against India (ODIs)
- Australia have hit the most match sixes in their last 4 matches in India (ODIs)
- Mitchell Starc has taken 3 wickets or more in 4 of his last 6 matches (ODIs)
- Mohammed Shami has taken 3+ wickets in 5 of his last 8 matches against Australia (ODIs)
Head to Head
India played Australia in 147 ODIs so far. Of these, there have been 55 wins for India and 82 wins for Australia. Ten matches ended without any result.
The last time these sides played before this series, was in March 2023, when Australia came from a match down to win the three-match series 2-1.
India Form
India followed their Asia Cup-winning heroics with a five-wicket win in the first ODI. It was a completely different team with several regulars rested, but the nature of the win was significant.
Bowling first, India managed to keep Australia down to 276 all out with Mohammed Shami taking 5 for 51. There were decent performances everywhere else, although Shardul Thakur’s figures were a worry (10-0-78-0).
The chase was anchored well by the openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill who scored 70s each. Stand-in captain KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav then added a fifty each to ease India to a comfortable win.
India Team News
India could rotate the squad with Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested in favour of Mohammed Siraj. Washington Sundar may be given a chance to play but that may need Ravindra Jadeja sitting out.
Australia Form
Australia lost a third match in a row as they came to India on the back of a 2-2 series result against South Africa, where they lost the last two matches.
The Kangaroos had a string of good scores by their batters but only David Warner could score a fifty (52). The final tally of 276 had seven sixes, which in the end proved to be a rare stat they won!
The visitors couldn’t quite get to terms with the ball as only an Adam Zampa two-wicket blitz put some pressure on India.
Australia Team News
Australia may rest Marcus Stoinis and slot in Aaron Hardie for a game. Alex Carey sat out the first match but if he comes in, it could be a straight swap with Josh Inglis. Josh Hazlewood may also fancy a game.

Verdict
I am backing Australia once again to hit the most sixes. They did that with some power left in the bank as the likes of Mitch Marsh didn’t fire. To go with that, keep an eye on the bowlers market with special focus on Shami.
