Sri Lanka are coming off a thrilling two-wicket win over Pakistan, that was in fact in a must-win fixture. India, on the other hand, lost to Bangladesh with a make-shift team. All that will be set aside when the teams take the field, but I am not venturing in the win market. I am rather looking at the opening partnership market and backing the Indian openers to do the job.
- India have posted the highest opening partnership in 6 of their last 7 completed matches (ODIs)
- Sri Lanka have conceded the highest opening partnership in 6 of their last 10 home matches (ODIs)
- Sri Lanka have conceded the highest opening partnership of the match in their last 4 matches against India (ODIs)
- Kuldeep Yadav has taken at least 2 wickets in 6 of his 9 bowling innings against Sri Lanka (ODIs)
Head to Head
India played Sri Lanka in 166 ODIs winning 97 and losing 57. Of the remaining, 11 ended without any result while one was tied.
Earlier in the series when the sides played at this venue, it was India who won by 41 runs. Batting first, India were all out for 213 with only Rohit Sharma (53) and Dunith Wellalage (5 for 40) impressing. Wellalage (42*) was once again the star with the bat, but Sri Lanka fell short as Kuldeep Yadav (4 for 43) sparkled for India.
India Form
India qualified for the final after winning against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super Fours. In the final and inconsequential game, the experimental side lost by six runs to Bangladesh.
Notwithstanding that loss, the Indians have a few worries all around. Shubman Gill (275 runs) remains their best hope with the bat scoring three 50+ scores in five innings. Others have been mostly inconsistent.
With the ball, Kuldeep Yadav (nine wickets) is proving to be a catch while Ravindra Jadeja (six wickets) has also pulled his weight.
India Team News
Axar Patel was injured in the match against Bangladesh and could be out of reckoning. Washington Sundar has flown in as a replacement and could be straight away playing in the XI.
Sri Lanka Form
Sri Lanka needed a late boost to qualify for the final as their two-wicket DLS method win over Pakistan in a virtual semi, gave them the ticket.
The Islanders have banked on the batting exploits of Kusal Mendis (253 runs) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (215) who have five scores of 50 or more between them.
With the ball, it has been young sensation Dunith Wellalage (ten wickets) who’s leading their show. Matheesha Pathirana (11 wickets) has been amongst the wickets too and could play a crucial role in this match.
Sri Lanka Team News
Sri Lanka will miss mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana and have drafted offspinner Sahan Arachchige as a replacement. Key question could be about their opening combination where Kusal Perera may get another game in place of Dimuth Karunaratne.

Verdict
I am not backing any team in the winners market as India have a very poor record in tournament finals. Don’t be surprised if Sri Lanka run out winners. Instead, I am putting money in the opening partnership market with India favoured to do well. Also keep an eye on the market for Kuldeep Yadav.
