India are on the verge of confirming their semis spot while Sri Lanka are about to confirm their exit. All that remains for the visitors is to stay in contention for a top-eight finish for qualification for the Champions Trophy next year. Markets seem to give a free run to India in the win market and I am staying away from that because there’s no value. I am putting my money on India posting the highest opening partnership.

  • India posted the highest o/p in 7 of their last 11 matches (ODIs)
  • India posted the highest o/p in their last 5 matches against Sri Lanka (ODIs)
  • Sri Lanka conceded the highest o/p in 6 of their last 10 matches (ODIs)
  • Virat Kohli has 4 centuries in his last 7 matches against Sri Lanka (ODIs)

Head to Head

India and Sri Lanka played 167 ODIs so far with India winning 98 and losing 57. Of the remaining, one ended in a tie while 11 finished without any result.

Of late, it was India who dominated the H2H section with 29 wins across the last 35 ODIs against Sri Lanka. That included winning the last five in a row.

India Form

India are top of the points tally after six rounds with a prefect record of six straight wins. They are on the verge of confirming their spot in the final four, which was looking a mere formality for some time now.

The hosts have been dominating in all three departments, although not without having a few scares. Rohit Sharma (398 runs) and Virat Kohli (354) have been scoring the bulk of runs while the poor run of Shreyas Iyer is a concern.

Bowling has been absolutely lively with Jasprit Bumrah (14 wickets) and Kuldeep Yadav (10) being consistent. The pack of the group has to be Mohammed Shami who has nine wickets from just two matches.

India Team News

Hardik Pandya may not be risked unless he’s fully fit. That could leave them with the option of continuing the same team that played England.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka are fourth from bottom with only four points from their six matches. They need to win all the remaining matches to have any chance of qualification.

The Islanders have been hit hard with multiple injuries and replacement players being added. Even the form of their best batter Kusal Mendis (268 runs) has dipped, leaving Pathum Nissanka (289) to lead the batting unit.

With the ball, the young left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka (13 wickets) has been a revelation. There is a big gap between him and the others though, highlighting the concerns for the Islanders.

Sri Lanka Team News

Dunith Wellalage missed out on a few games for Sri Lanka and could come back into contention.

Verdict

India have been dominant in this tournament chalking out wins at will. The markets seem to play sport and have given very low odds on an Indian win. I am instead dipping into the opening partnership with India set to post the highest o/p.
