Ireland vs India Second T20I

After rain curtailed the first match, Ireland and India will hope they can get a full game to achieve their objectives. The second match will be played at The Village in Dublin on Sunday night, Indian time.

Ireland had a top-order failure with the bat, but were quick to recover and post a decent score in the first match. Yet, they remain far off track against India, who remain hot favourites to win this match. It is the win handicap that is appearing interesting once again.

  • Ireland have lost 5 of their last 6 matches at this venue (T20Is)
  • Ireland beat the handicap of 6.5 wickets or 33.5 runs in 6 of their last 7 matches here (T20Is)
  • India have won each of their 6 matches against Ireland (T20Is)
  • Jasprit Bumrah has taken 2+ wickets in his last 3 away matches (T20Is)

Head to Head

There have been six T20Is played between Ireland and India to date. All matches have been won by India with five of those played at this venue.

Ireland Form

After successful participation in the T20 World Cup Europe Region Qualifier, Ireland nearly fluffed their chances against a top side. The batters, especially, failed to get going.

The top-order folded easily to be 31 for 5 in just over six overs but did well to recover through a late partnership. Their eventual score of 139 for 7 gave them something to fight for.

Ireland looked out of depth in the initial phases of their bowling but rain brought succour, especially with two quick wickets. They would be keen to take those positives to Sunday where they can look to upset the odds.

Ireland Team News

While there were some concerns with the bat in the top-order, Ireland may not opt for wholesale changes.

India Form

India’s outlook was about how their returning players are going to perform. The bowlers didn’t disappoint although they would have wanted to fold the Irish to a lower score.

Part of the reason is their inability to keep runs to a minimum in the final overs. That concern may stay on the backburner for the moment as the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna will look to test their match fitness.

The batters didn’t have much time in the middle to show their mettle although they came close to losing the match via DRS.

India Team News

India’s bowlers led the show in the first match and that could push them to retain the side for the second T20I. Any changes could be in the bowling department, if they opt for rotation.

Verdict

Ireland lost a great opportunity to impress in the first match, where their batting was well below par. Their bowlers were also off the track, although two quick wickets gave them an outside chance. With weather not expected to be a hindrance on Sunday, Ireland will have to find new ways of stopping the Indians. I am backing them to beat the match handicap while Jasprit Bumrah could fancy getting amongst the wickets.
