Historically, this is a match that the Scorchers have dominated. The Renegades have struggled to get the right results and even in their first match of this campaign, they couldn’t get over the line. I am backing the Perth Scorchers to start the tournament with a win.
- Melbourne Renegades have lost 4 of their last 5 matches (BBL)
- Perth Scorchers have won 8 of their last 9 matches (BBL)
- Perth Scorchers have won their last 5 matches against Melbourne Renegades (BBL)
- Aaron Finch was Melbourne Renegades best batter in 5 of the last 14 matches he played (BBL)
Head to Head
This is a fixture that was completely dominated by the Perth Scorchers. There have been 18 matches between these sides with 15 wins for the Scorchers and three wins for the Renegades.
Last season saw the Scorchers win both their matches against the Renegades making it five success H2H wins. They won by five wickets at the Marvel Stadium before winning by ten runs at the Perth Stadium.
Melbourne Renegades Form
The Renegades finished 3rd in the regular season last year to advance to the playoffs. They were defeated in the knockout by Brisbane Heat, but they showed improvement in qualifying past the group stage.
That momentum wasn’t continued at the start of this year though, as the Renegades started with an eight-run defeat against Sydney Sixers. Will Sutherland was the hero with both bat and ball (2 for 21 and 51 not out off 30 balls) but couldn’t stop the loss.
There were runs for the young basher Jake Fraser-McGurk, while it would be interesting to see if Quinton de Kock joins in time for the match.
Melbourne Renegades Team News
Quinton’s arrival could mean he swaps for Jordan Cox in the playing XI. The Renegades could look to draft in Peter Siddle after the veteran seamer missed the first match due to an injury.
Perth Scorchers Form
Last season saw the Scorchers win a second title in a row making it a fifth BBL title in total. It was a complete domination after they topped the regular season table as well.
The Scorchers won 11 of their 14 matches including both matches against the Renegades. There would be caution in the camp though, as they are likely to miss some big names.
Jhye Richardson will be the one to watch out for, as he looks to build up his case for another hilt in Test cricket. There could be room for Aaron Hardie as well.
Perth Scorchers Team News
Mitch Marsh, Cameron Green are on Test duty while Zak Crawley is in the Caribbean playing for England. Ashton Agar is another miss, as he continues to recover from the leg injury sustained on the India tour.
