Netherlands vs Bangladesh ODI World Cup

In a clash that could be seen as one between equals, the Netherlands and Bangladesh clash for honours. This ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match #28 will be played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday.

There is very little to separate these two sides in the bottom three of the points tally. The Netherlands may be forgiven for marking this match as one of their chances to get a win, before the tournament. It could be a very interesting encounter and I am taking an aggressive route and backing the Netherlands to spring another surprise.

  • The Netherlands have won the only match against Bangladesh in neutral venues (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost their last 4 matches (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost 11 of 14 matches they played in India (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost 6 of their last 7 matches in the World Cups (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have only been two ODIs played between the Netherlands and Bangladesh. The ledger is 1-1 with the teams winning both matches by the same margin of six wickets.

The last time they played was in March 2011 with the Netherlands winning with nearly nine overs remaining.

Netherlands Form

The Netherlands are bottom of the points tally with two points from five matches. Their only win came against South Africa, while the losses have been to Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Australia.

It is safe to say that batting was never their best suit although the Netherlands are punching above their weight. Only three batters aggregate 100+ runs for them in the tournament, but no one scored more than 137.

Bowlers were steady without being spectacular as Bas de Leede’s nine wickets is the best individual return in this World Cup.

Netherlands Team News

Almost every Dutch bowler took the beating against Australia but they may stick to the same combination. There may be a temptation to draft in Ryan Klein or even Shariz Ahmed.

Bangladesh Form

After completion of five matches, Bangladesh are 8th in the standings with two points. Their only win came against Afghanistan in their tournament opener. Post that, they had losses against England, New Zealand, India, and South Africa.

Injuries hampered the Tigers, but more importantly, their tepid batting displays have pulled them down. No batter is yet to get into the 200-run aggregate mark, while there has been a solitary century from their batters.

With the ball too, the Bangladeshis have struggled to show impact. None of their bowlers took more than six wickets, while most drifted into economy rates of six and above.

Bangladesh Team News

Bangladesh could drop Tanzid Hasan and draft in Towhid Hridoy, while moving Mahmudullah up the order. There’s a case for Mahedi Hasan to hope for a game.

Verdict

Far from the adrenaline highs of an Australia vs New Zealand encounter, the Netherlands vs Bangladesh is going to be equally interesting. It is perhaps the best chance for the Dutch to scalp another Test playing nation. I am sticking my neck out and backing the Netherlands to win here.
