New Zealand vs Bangladesh ODI World Cup

A confident New Zealand side would look to make it three wins in a row when they take on a dangerous Bangladesh in their third match of the ICC ODI World Cup. This match #11 of the tournament will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

New Zealand have been the standout team of the tournament winning both matches comprehensively. They are leading the table comfortably based on NRR and should look at securing another win over Bangladesh. The Tigers have been up and down with their form and that could play against them, although the conditions could be spin-friendly. A win for the Kiwis is what I am going to put my money on.

  • New Zealand have won their last 4 matches (ODIs)
  • New Zealand have won 3 and tied one of their last 4 World Cup matches (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost all their 5 World Cup matches against New Zealand (ODIs)
  • Bangladesh have lost their last 9 completed ODIs against New Zealand (ODIs)
  • Mitchell Santner has taken 2+ wickets in his last 2 matches (ODIs)
  • Mitchell Santner has also taken 2 wickets in 2 of his last 3 matches against Bangladesh (ODIs)

Head to Head

New Zealand played Bangladesh in 41 ODIs so far with 30 wins for the Kiwis and ten victories for Bangladesh. The other match ended without a result.

The teams last played in September this year when the Kiwis toured Bangladesh with a second-string side. They won that series 2-0 with one match ending without a result because of rain.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand started the tournament with a nine-wicket win over England in Ahmedabad followed by a 99-run win over the Netherlands in Hyderabad.

Both victories were led by their batters with Devon Conway (184 runs) and Rachin Ravindra (174 runs) leading the charts. With the ball, it is Mitch Santner (seven wickets) and Matt Henry (six wickets) running the show.

With matches against India, Australia, South Africa and Pakistan set to come later in their roster, the Kiwis would want to continue their winning momentum and stay in the top half of the points table.

New Zealand Team News

New Zealand are likely to decide on captain Kane Williamson after more practice sessions after he missed the first two matches. If he plays, it could be Mark Chapman missing out.

Bangladesh Form

Bangladesh are 6th in the points tally with two points from two matches. They started with a six-wicket win over Afghanistan in Dharamsala before losing by 137 runs to England at the same venue.

The Tigers aren’t quite delivering with the bat, with only Litton Das (89 runs) among the runs. Their mainstay Najmul Shanto (59) is yet to kick-start.

Bowling too has lacked a leader with Shoriful Islam’s five wickets being the best for Bangladesh. Shakib Al Hasan has been miserly with ER of 4.55 and could be crucial on a slow Chennai pitch.

Bangladesh Team News

Bangladesh may be tempted to make a change at the top with Tanzid Hasan struggling. There could be a case for left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed coming into the selection mix.

Verdict

New Zealand are on a roll and look better-placed than Bangladesh to continue their winning run. Even tough the pitch in Chennai could play to their strengths, Bangladesh are currently in the midst of some poor form to take full advantage. I am backing New Zealand to win this match while Mitchell Santner remains a good pick to be their best bowler.
