New Zealand vs Pakistan Third T20I

With the series on the line, Pakistan face a tough task of halting the run of New Zealand as the teams lock horns in the third T20I. This match will be played at the University Oval in Dunedin on Wednesday.

It was all New Zealand in the first two matches, with contrasting wins to take a 2-0 lead. Pakistan will have no option but to improve by leaps and bounds to make a comeback. Is that possible, though? Despite some changes and absences in their squad, the hosts look good value to continue their winning run.

  • New Zealand have won the 2 matches played at this venue (T20Is)
  • New Zealand have won their last 4 completed matches against Pakistan (T20Is)
  • Pakistan have lost 6 of their last 7 completed matches (T20Is)
  • Babar Azam has scored a 50 in 4 of his last 7 matches against New Zealand (T20Is)

Head to Head

There have been 36 T20Is between New Zealand and Pakistan so far with the Kiwis winning 15 and the Green Caps winning 20. One game ended without any result.

The series saw New Zealand win the first match at Auckland by 46 runs and then follow it up with a 21-run win in Hamilton.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand had a near-perfect series so far, winning both the matches quite convincingly. Their batters have settled well and are looking the part while the bowlers have bossed the conditions.

It is Finn Allenn (108 runs, SR 192.85) who has been a revelation at the top of the order for the hosts, while Daryll Mitchell (78 runs) has been his usual self.

With the ball, Tim Southee and his fast-bowling partner Adam Milne have taken six wickets each.

New Zealand Team News

Kane Williamson is out of the series with an injury, although he was anyway scheduled to be rested for this game. Tim Seifert could be replacing him.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan would have wanted the series to be level coming into this match, but they have only themselves to blame. Characteristic batting collapses plus uncharacteristic bowling lapses have been their bane.

The visitors have enjoyed the batting dominance of Babar Azam (123 runs, SR 157.69) who has scored a half-century in each of the two games. Unfortunately, the support hasn’t been forthcoming.

With the ball, Haris Rauf and Abbas Afridi have lifted the spirits taking five wickets each but with every bowler conceding at least nine runs per over, they were left clueless on the field.

Pakistan Team News

Aamer Jamal looked ineffective and expensive in the first two matches and could be rested. It would be interesting to see if Pakistan opt for an extra spinner in his place.

Verdict

Pakistan have had their moments in both the matches in the series, only to fold out to a large margin of victory. New Zealand have been very consistent in all three departments and look favourites to win here. I am backing the Kiwis to win here, while Babar Azam could fancy another big knock here.
