Pakistan vs Afghanistan ODI World Cup

Pakistan will look to end their two-game losing run as they come up against fellow Asian neighbours Afghanistan. This ODI World Cup match #22 will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday, October 23.

After consecutive losses to India and Australia, Pakistan can’t afford another defeat. It is not going to be easier though, as Afghanistan have proven against England that they can raise their game. That said, Pakistan have the right attack to make sure Afghanistan’s batting won’t hurt them. I am backing Pakistan to win this match.

  • Pakistan have won all 7 matches against Afghanistan (ODIs)
  • Pakistan have won 2 matches they played at this venue (ODIs)
  • Pakistan have won 6 of their last 8 matches in World Cups (ODIs)
  • Afghanistan have lost 17 of their 19 matches in World Cups (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been seven Pakistan vs Afghanistan ODIs so far, with Pakistan winning all those. That included a tight three-wicket win in the last World Cup.

The last time these sides played was in a three-match series played at neutral venues in Sri Lanka that Pakistan won 3-0.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan are 5th in the points tally after four matches with four points, winning and losing two each. They started with two wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka, but lost to India and Australia straight after.

The Green Caps need to arrest their losing slide as another loss will see them slide down the table. They are over-dependant on Mohammad Rizwan (294) for their runs, and would be desperate to see their captain Babar Azam (83) get some form.

With the ball, it has been their pacers leading the rout as Shaheen Shah Afridi (nine wickets) and Haris Rauf (eight) have started leading the charge.

Pakistan Team News

All the bowlers received a pasting against Australia and Pakistan could be thinking of some changes to improve. Mohammad Nawaz may be under threat with either Agha Salman or Shadab Khan coming in.

Afghanistan Form

Afghanistan are bottom of the points tally with only two points from four matches. They won against England, but losses to Bangladesh, India and New Zealand have showed them a way to the bottom.

This is a match they have perhaps pencilled in to win, considering the conditions here. They would need better batting efforts though, as the top-order is yet to click, except Rahmanullah Gurbaz (159 runs).

The bowlers haven’t done any better either, as only Rashid Khan (six wickets) has shown the willingness to improve.

Afghanistan Team News

Afghanistan played the same team for two games in a row, but could be thinking about making at least some changes in the bowling.

Verdict

Pakistan would have been hurt with two straight losses – to India and Australia. They can’t afford to lose another as that would pull them down in the table. They have a perfect record against Afghanistan, although some of the recent matches have been close. I am still backing Pakistan to do the honours and win here.
