It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest clashes of the Asia Cup with Pakistan ‘hosting’ their game in Sri Lanka. They have the advantage of having already played a game which may mean better practice for their bowlers and batters. It could once again come down to India’s batters vs Pakistan bowlers. The recent stutter in India’s selections and results give Pakistan a slight edge in this match. I am backing Pakistan to win this match.

  • Pakistan have won 8 of their last 9 matches (ODIs)
  • Pakistan have won 5 of their last 6 matches played in Sri Lanka (ODIs)
  • India have lost 3 of their last 5 matches (ODIs)
  • Babar Azam has scored at least 50 runs in 17 of his last 22 matches (ODIs)
  • Virat Kohli has 3 scores of 50 or above in his last 4 matches against Pakistan (ODIs)

Head to Head

Pakistan and India have played in 132 ODIs so far with 73 wins for Pakistan and 55 wins for India. Four matches have ended as no results.

In the Asia Cup ODI format, these two teams have faced each other 13 times with India winning seven and Pakistan winning five with one game washed out.

Pakistan Form

After winning the series against Afghanistan 3-0, which was incidentally in Sri Lanka, Pakistan started their Asia Cup campaign on a high. They thrashed minnows Nepal by 238 runs to nearly book their spot in the Super 4s.

Hundreds for Babar Azam (151) and Iftikhar Ahmed (109) vaulted Pakistan to 342 for 6 after batting first. That they recovered from 25 for 2 gave more credence to their total.

With the ball, it was a stellar show as Shadab Khan (4/27) stole the show with his tweakers. There were two wickets each for Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi as well, with Pakistan warming up for the bigger encounters.

Pakistan Team News

Pakistan could opt to use the same team they fielded against Nepal, unless they want to field an extra seamer in place of spinning all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz.

India Form

India are coming into this tournament on the back of a 2-1 series win in the West Indies where they fielded a weakened side. A lot of key players sat that series out, which makes this side a completely new one.

Rohit Sharma returns to lead the side that has the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah returning from injuries. Even Prasidh Krishna returns after a long spell while Mohammed Shami is back after a brief rest from the Windies tour.

With a number of players either rested or coming back from injury, India have a cloud of uncertainty over their team.

India Team News

With KL Rahul injured for the first two games, India will be looking at Ishan Kishan as their ‘keeper. That leaves difficult questions to be answered over Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna with only two likely to make the cut.

Verdict

India’s unit has a number of question marks around the team with a few players coming back from injuries and a few others after a long break. Pakistan, on the other hand, have been consistently playing for the last month and should fancy their chances of continuing that momentum. It is advantage Pakistan, regardless of the recent history of this contest. I am backing them to win with Babar Azam likely to score a fifty.
