Pakistan vs India Asia Cup Super Fours

The ‘mother of all rivalries’ Pakistan vs India was played for only one innings when the sides met in the league stage. They now meet in the Super Fours with the archrivals playing on September 10, Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo with the match starting at 3pm IST. Incidentally, a reserve day has been added to this clash with the game to continue on Monday from where it left off.

The strength and pull of this fixture can be gauged from the fact that this remains the only league game to get a reserve day! With weather a massive factor in Colombo, no one wants a second India-Pakistan match to end without a result. Even in the first match, it was the Pakistani pacers who looked in devastating control. I am putting my money on Pakistan to win the match.

  • Pakistan have won 9 of their last 10 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Pakistan have won 6 of their last 7 completed matches played in Sri Lanka (ODIs)
  • India have lost 3 of their last 6 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Babar Azam has scored at least 50 runs in 17 of his last 23 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Haris Rauf has taken at least 2 wickets in 7 of his last 9 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

Pakistan and India have played in 133 ODIs so far with 73 wins for Pakistan and 55 wins for India. Five matches including the last one in the league stage have seen no results.

In the Asia Cup ODI format, these two teams have faced each other 14 times with India winning seven and Pakistan winning five while two were washed out.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan topped Group A with three points and a healthier run rate than India. They won by 238 runs against Nepal before the match against India got washed out.

In their first match of the Super Fours, Pakistan trounced Bangladesh by seven wickets. Both their wins have come in Pakistan venues and this match will signal the start of their stay in Sri Lanka for this tournament.

Babar Azam (168 runs) once again remains their top batter in the tournament while Haris Rauf (nine wickets) has combined with Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi (seven each) to lead their bowling charts.

Pakistan Team News

Pakistan could opt to retain the same team as the previous match.

India Form

India were second behind Pakistan in the Group Stage with only one win under their belt. They defeated Nepal by 10 wickets by DLS method in a rain-affected game.

It was an unconvincing performance though, as they allowed Nepal to post 230 with only Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja taking three wickets each.

Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma then responded with fifties to go past the DLS target in the 21st over. Yet, batting remains a concern as they stuttered to 266 all out against Pakistan before rain washed it out. Only Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya excelled with individual 80s.

India Team News

Jasprit Bumrah rejoined the side while KL Rahul is on the verge of getting fit. It would be interesting to see if they bench Kishan in favour of Rahul. Shami could be the one benched to let Bumrah return to the playing XI.

Verdict

Pakistan grew from strength to strength in this tournament and are looking confident of their game. Even their side looks well-balanced and well-oiled. India, on the other hand, continue to struggle with their choices. If there’s a full game, Pakistan should fancy their chances. With rain around, the dynamics could change. I am putting my money on Haris Rauf taking multiple wickets with a small wager on Pakistan winning the game.
