Pakistan vs Netherlands ODI World Cup

It’s time for one of the tournament’s favourites to start their campaign as Pakistan take on the Netherlands in match #2 of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. This match will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad starting at 2pm, IST time.

It’ll be a huge upset if the Netherlands go on to win here. Although they are capable of making a match out of this, Pakistan look well-covered to win this in a canter. It is the opening partnership market that looks interesting and I am putting my money on Pakistan to walk away with the honours.

  • Pakistan posted the highest opening partnership in 4 of their last 5 matches against the Netherlands (ODIs)
  • Pakistan posted the highest opening partnership in 3 of their last 5 matches (ODIs)
  • The Netherlands have lost all 6 previous matches against Pakistan (ODIs)
  • Babar Azam has 3 scores of 50 or more in his last 6 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

Pakistan have played the Netherlands in six ODIs so far, winning all six. The last of those matches was played in August 2022 when Pakistan won by 9 runs.

In the World Cups, these sides have met twice before in the 1996 and 2003 editions. Pakistan won the 1996 match by eight wickets and the 2003 match by 97 runs.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan are coming off a disappointing Asia Cup journey where they crashed out in the Super Fours. Losses to India and Sri Lanka ended their participation.

The Green Caps participated in two pre-tournament warm-up games, both at this venue. They were beaten by New Zealand by five wickets in the first, before losing by 14 runs to Australia.

With a strong batting unit and a bowling unit that is impressive on its day, Pakistan are one of the favourites to reach at least the semi-finals this tournament.

Pakistan Team News

Pakistan are likely to leave out Usama Mir, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Mohammad Nawaz and Abdullah Shafique.

Netherlands Form

The Netherlands were last seen in the ICC World Cup Qualifier where they were a losing finalist to Sri Lanka. That tournament saw them win against West Indies, pipping them in the final analysis.

That tournament gave them a ticket to the tournament to rub shoulders with the big teams. Unfortunately for the Dutch, their two warm-up games have been hit by rains. They played only 37 overs against Australia where they were 84 for 6 after conceding 166 in 23 overs.

The second warm-up against India was abandoned without toss, depriving the Holland side of much-needed practice before the big games start piling up.

Netherlands Team News

The Netherlands could be benching Sybrand Engelbrecht, Saqib Zulfiqar, Wesley Barresi and Ryan Klein.

Verdict

Pakistan are one of the favourites to progress through to the semis and they are unlikely to be put to test by the Netherlands here. The Dutch have the strength to test a few teams but this match may be coming a bit too early for them to show their worth. There’s not much value in backing a Pakistani win, so I am putting my money in the opening partnership market with the Green Caps likely to come out top.
