Pakistan vs Sri Lanka ODI World Cup

Pakistan will look to extend their strong start to the ICC ODI 2023 World Cup when they play Asian neighbours Sri Lanka in their second match. This match #8 of the tournament will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Pakistan ticked most of the boxes in their first match against the Netherlands, although it wasn’t a complete performance. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, were annihilated by South Africa in their first match. History suggests that Pakistan have always enjoyed playing Sri Lanka in the World Cups and this could continue here. I am backing Pakistan to win this match.

  • Pakistan have won 10 of their last 13 completed matches (ODIs)
  • Pakistan have won 8 of their last 9 completed matches against Sri Lanka (ODIs)
  • Sri Lanka have lost all 7 World Cup matches against Pakistan (ODIs)
  • Sri Lanka have lost 12 of their last 13 matches played in India, including the last six in a row (ODIs)
  • Haris Rauf has taken 2+ wickets in 8 of his last 11 matches (ODIs)

Head to Head

Pakistan played Sri Lanka in 156 ODIs, winning 92 and losing 59 with one match ending in a tie. The remaining four ended without a result.

The last time these sides played was in the Asia Cup 2023 when Pakistan were defeated by two wickets. In the World Cups though, it’s Pakistan who have the upper hand winning all seven completed matches in this competition’s history.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan started their tournament with an 81-run win over the Netherlands at this venue. Their score of 286 was led by Mohd. Rizwan and Saud Shakeel who led from the front with scores of 68 each.
The bowlers then restricted the Dutch to 205 with Haris Rauf taking three and Hasan Ali taking two wickets.

With games against India and Australia up next, Pakistan would be looking for a morale-boosting win as a 2-0 record ahead of that India clash would be a psychological boost.

Pakistan Team News

Pakistan don’t have any injury issues in their side and with this match being played at the same venue as their first one, they could play the same XI.

Sri Lanka Form

Sri Lanka lost a high-scoring game against South Africa in their tournament opener by 102 runs, in a match that saw an aggregate of 754 runs.

Bowlers struggled to control the leakage of runs as Sri Lanka conceded 428 runs off the 50 overs. Every Lankan bowler conceded at least eight runs per over on that day.

The Lankans did slightly better with the bat, with Kusal Mendis’ 76 off 42 balls leading their charge. There were two more individual fifties too, which remains their positives from that defeat.

Sri Lanka Team News

Sri Lanka could make changes to their bowling line-up and Maheesh Theekshana may fancy a game in place of one of the faltering pacers.

Verdict

Pakistan didn’t move into fourth gear in their win over the Netherlands, but will look to do so against Sri Lanka. The Lankans were annihilated in their first match, in all departments, and have a lot to improve. It is difficult to see them doing so overnight, especially as they come up against their nemesis Pakistan, whom they have never beaten in a World Cup match. I am putting my money on Pakistan continuing that run, while for the longer odds, I am backing Haris Rauf to be Pakistan’s best bowler.
