South Africa vs Australia Fifth ODI

South Africa levelled the series with a record-breaking 164-run win on Friday in Centurion over Australia. The teams now meet at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday with the series on the line. This match will be played on 17th September from 1:30pm IST.

From being in charge of the series after two matches and probably the start of the chase in the third, Australia have lost the plot. It’s now 2-2 and South Africa have all the momentum. I am looking at the market for sixes, and backing South Africa to do the job.

  • South Africa have hit the most 6s of the match in 9 of their last 10 home matches against Australia (ODIs)
  • South Africa have hit the most 6s in 5 of their last 7 home matches against all sides (ODIs)
  • Australia have conceded the most 6s of the match in their last 3 matches (ODIs)
  • Kagiso Rabada has taken at least 2 wickets in 8 of his last 10 matches against Australia (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 107 ODIs in total, between South Africa and Australia. Of these, the Proteas have won 53 and lost 50 with three ending as ties and one had no result.

In South Africa, there have been 50 ODIs with 27 wins for South Africa and 22 wins for Australia.

South Africa Form

South Africa took time to get into the series but have now won their last two matches to level the ODIs. In fact, from the tour point of view, they have come back from being 5-0 down.

The Proteas will once again be looking at Heinrich Klaasen (237 runs) to lead their batting with Quinton de Kock (183) adding his weight.

As for the bowlers, South Africa have Kagiso Rabada (seven) leading their wicket tally while Tabraiz Shamsi and Gerald Coetzee took six wickets each.

South Africa Team News

South Africa missed regular captain Temba Bavuma on Friday with the batter suffering an adductor strain. Anrich Nortje is out of the series already.

Australia Form

Australia started the series brightly winning the first two matches but have since then lost the momentum spectacularly. They are now searching for a way to overcome the loss of players due to different reasons.

The visitors have Marnus Labuschagne (239) leading their batting charts, ironically after coming as a concussion sub. David Warner (196) has been their next-best batter.

With the ball, there hasn’t been a leader for the Aussies with only two bowlers taking five wickets each. Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood are the two and will be looking to add to that aggregate.

Australia Team News

Australia will be without Travis Head who fractured his hand on Friday. Josh Inglis could be up for a game, while they may look to make some bowling changes.

Verdict

South Africa have risen well and are perhaps the in-form team going into the final game. Australia will have additional worries in that their team is now hit with multiple injuries. Concerns remain over their morale too, although you never rule out an Australia team in any circumstances. I am, however, staying away from the win market. Rather, I am dipping once again in the sixes market and backing the heavy hitters to come good for South Africa. I am also looking at the market for Kagiso Rabada and him taking at least two wickets.
