South Africa vs Australia Fourth ODI

South Africa bounced back in style when the chips were down, defeating Australia by 111 runs in the third ODI. The teams now move to Centurion for the fourth ODI on Friday, September 15 from 4:30pm IST at the SuperSport Park.

The losing margin does a disservice to Australia as they looked in the game for most of the period. It is just that they couldn’t close it out against the spinners. With the pitch expected to assist the seamers in Centurion, it could be a case of whose bowling comes up top. I am once again putting my money on Australia as they look better-equipped to be consistent.

  • South Africa have lost their last 4 completed matches at this venue (ODIs)
  • Australia have won 10 of their last 12 matches (ODIs)
  • Australia have won 2 of their last 3 matches against South Africa (ODIs)
  • Kagiso Rabada has taken at least 2 wickets in 7 of his last 9 matches against Australia (ODIs)

Head to Head

There have been 106 ODIs in total, between South Africa and Australia. Of these, the Proteas have won 52 and lost 50 with three ending as ties and one had no result.

In South Africa, there have been 49 ODIs with 26 wins for South Africa and 22 wins for Australia.

South Africa Form

South Africa took a long time coming into this series but they arrived in style. The Proteas lost the first ODI by 3 wickets, the second one by 123 runs but came back to win the third by 111 runs.

Aiden Markram was the star with a match-winning century in the third match, but it’s captain Temba Bavuma who has been consistent. He has 217 runs in the series with a 100 and 50 to his name.

Bowling has been led by Tabraiz Shamsi who has six wickets at an ER of 5.29. Incidentally, he’s the only South African bowler to concede under six runs an over in this series.

South Africa Team News

South Africa made four changes for the third ODI and could be forced to make some here. Keshav Maharaj may make way to Kagiso Rabada while Anrich Nortje may get a game in place of Magala or Coetzee.

Australia Form

Australia would like to consider that the third ODI was a blip, as they were authoritative in the T20Is as well as the first two ODIs. Even captain Mitchell Marsh spoke about being better to close out the series.

The old warhorse David Warner (184 runs) has been doing well, which is good news for the visitors. After two high scores, Marnus Labuschagne (219 runs) was caught up on the law of averages.

The bowling load has been equally shared, especially with the rotation policy that Australia have kept using.

Australia Team News

Australia will be without Ashton Agar, who has flown back home on paternal leave. Spencer Johnson could also be out, as his fitness remains a question.

Verdict

Third ODI was just a minor aberration for Australia, who have been impressive on the tour. They should get back to winning ways here as the series win is on offer. I am putting my money on Australia winning here. Keep an eye on the market for Kagiso Rabada to pick up at least two wickets.
