South Africa vs Australia Second T20I

After a breezy first match that saw Australia record a massive 111-run win, South Africa face the task of staying alive in the series. The second T20I will be played at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Friday with action beginning at 9:30pm IST.

The Proteas were all over the place in the first match and looked no match for the Aussies who were dominant in all fields. The hosts will need a massive turnaround to even compete, which makes Australia heavy favourites to close out the series here. I am backing Australia to win the second T20I and with that, take an unassailable lead in the series.

  • South Africa have lost 5 of their last 6 matches (T20Is)
  • South Africa have lost 7 of their last 9 home matches against Australia (T20Is)
  • Australia have won their last 4 completed matches (T20Is)
  • Mitchell Marsh has scored at least 51 runs in 5 of his last 7 innings for Australia (All Formats)

Head to Head

There have been 23 T20Is so far between South Africa and Australia. Of these, 15 have been won by Australia and eight by South Africa. The recent record is very poor with the Proteas losing ten of their last 14 against Australia in this format.

South Africa Form

South Africa were last seen in any international match back in April and that rustiness was evident in the first match. They couldn’t hold any control with the ball with every bowler conceding at least ten runs an over.

That saw them leak 226 runs and from there on, it was always a steep challenge. The batters never really got going, although at 47 for 1 in 4.4 overs, they looked set for a closer match.

In the end, the collapse was surreal as only three batters scored in double digits.

South Africa Team News

There could be a change or two for the South Africans in the bowling department and possibly a look at their batting with Temba Bavuma not doing as well as he would have loved to.

Australia Form

Australia played their first T20 after the World Cup in November but never showed any rustiness. Perhaps the fact that they were playing continuous cricket, albeit in other forms, the Aussies looked sharp.

Captain Mitch Marsh led from the front with a knock of 92 from 49 balls while the hard-hitting Tim David tested the boundaries with a 64 off 28 balls. Together they struck 20 boundaries and six big hits to take the game away from South Africa.

With the ball, debutant Tanveer Sangha sparkled with a four-wicket haul while Marcus Stoinis also chipped in with three wickets.

Australia Team News

Australia could use the same XI to make sure they win the series before getting a chance to rotate their squad in the final match.

Verdict

South Africa looked out of touch and out of place in the first match, coming second-best to Australia in all departments. Yet, there were glimpses of good play and they could bank on specific individuals to lead the fight. That said, Australia look well-balanced and all-round to win another match. I am backing the visitors to complete the series win here.
